Bug with subtitle encoding

Postby milan.smart » 25 Oct 2010 00:02

I experienced strange subtitle encoding behaviour. I have these two subtitle files in the directory along with the movie: "Knight and Day[2010]DvDrip[Eng]-FXG.en.srt" and "Knight and Day[2010]DvDrip[Eng]-FXG.cz.srt". I use "Eastern European (Windows 1250)" encoding and the Czech version of the subtitle file has wrong characters with diacritics. When I rename that English srt file to just "english.srt" the Czech subtitles are now alright. When I rename the English file to its original name the Czech encoding is displayed wrongly again. Strange, huh? Btw, I miss the Central European encoding settings, I use that in other video player app and its always okay.
PS: I have Mac OS X 10.6.4 and VLC version 1.1.3

The best solution is to save the srt file so that it uses the UTF-8 encoding.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

Well I solved it by renaming the file, I just wanted to point out this weird bug, that maybe someone from VLC can fix it.

Hi,

I observed that whenever there is an ANSI subtitle in the movie's folder besides the other (accented) ones,
the latter will appear with all accented letters replaced with question marks. As soon as I delete the english subtitle,
the accented letters appear correctly. (I think when you renamed your english subtitle file, VLC has simply
not considered it as a subtitle belonging to the movie.)

I think this is a bug, that would be nice to be corrected.
(vlc 1.1.4, win)
