MPEG-4 XviD codec displayed but DivX 6.8.5 in real

Postby routi » 16 Oct 2010 09:14

Opening an .avi file and looking at the codec Information it shows the video codec MPEG-4 XviD codec, but that is not true!
Using the file information of Virtual Dub there is the DivX 6.8.5 codec shown.
Using the Videoinspector:Codec: DivX 4/5/6 Stream Header FourCC: DIVX Stream Format FourCC: XVID

VLC Streaming and converting using the MPEG4 Video Codec produces also this DivX 6.8.5 output file with wrong Stream Header FourCC: DIVX Stream Format FourCC: XVID.
This DivX 6.8.5 codec does not work with standard MPEG-4 DVD Player.

At the video output selection there should be a possibility to select one of the two different MPEG-4 codecs:
MPEG-4 Codec: XviD MPEG-4 /Stream Header FourCC: xvid / Stream Format FourCC: XVID
MPEG-4 Codec: DivX 4/5/6 /Stream Header FourCC: divx / Stream Format FourCC: DX50

1.) It seems to be a wrong codec Info.
2.) Please implement these two different video MPEG4 codec in the video output menue.

1) "XVID" FourCC is MPEG-4 Xvid. this is normal.
2) What is the use?

1.) MPEG-4 XviD is not the same as MPEG-4 DivX 6xx, these are different codecs and should be shown correct at the file info
2.) The output file of VLC of konverting or streaming with the actual available MPEG4 video setting is "DivX 4/5/6 Stream Header FourCC: DIVX Stream Format FourCC: XVID" and causes file error in a standard Home DVD Player
So the idea is to have the possibility to chosse the exact video output codec format to avoid these errors:
MPEG-4 XviD MPEG-4 /Stream Header FourCC: xvid / Stream Format FourCC: XVID
MPEG-4 DivX 4/5/6 /Stream Header FourCC: divx / Stream Format FourCC: DX50
