.ASS sub disappear when seeking

Postby TheFalcon » 14 Jul 2010 01:39

Hello,

First I have to say this is a small problem but still it's a bug. I found a bug in the combination DV AVI (or MP4) with .A S S sub

Displaying the sub is fine. But when I seek the sub disappears. To get the sub displayed again I have to re-drag'n drop, and that after every seek.
I use those .A S S as datecode's for DV-AVI's so it's quite annoying to re-drag'n drop everytime.

It's to do with the timing of the subs. If you seek past the time point the sub is supposed to be displayed, then vlc doesn't know that the sub should be displayed - hence no sub.

Have to agree that it's a pain in the .a ss^_^

This must be an VLC bug, and has nothing to do with the timings I think.
Cause I have also a MPEG2 video, and there . A ss sub is displayed normal (also when you seek).

I've been trying to convert an m2ts BD rip for the iPhone 4 (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=82050). Warbling audio in 1.1.4 aside, this disappearing subtitle thing seems to be what was wrong with my 1.1.0 conversion (which prompted my upgrade to 1.1.4).

Now that I know that it's seeking that's removing the subtitles, I'm starting to test (and keep) conversions from the various versions from 1.1.0 on up.

So far, 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 both have this problem.. the audio and video is fine, the subtitles are present if I watch through the opening credits without skipping, but they disappear permanently throughout if I skip.

It's working on a 1.1.2 conversion now and I will continue on through 1.1.4 when I get a chance to report back any changes I notice. I didn't keep a copy, but the old 1.1.4 version, as I recall, had subtitles throughout even with skipping but the audio warbled no matter what settings I tried. Something appears to have gotten tweaked between versions that fixed the subtitles and gimped the audio, but I'll have to check them all out to suggest where.

In 1.1.2 and 1.1.3, everything works as expected (video, audio, and subtitles with skipping). So I suspect 1.1.2 fixed the subtitle issue and 1.1.4 broke the audio somehow.

Not sure if this applies to the .a ss subtitles as well, but it's similar behaviour.. perhaps the fix in 1.1.2 can be ported over easily enough if so?

Yes, BD subtitles.. they seemed to experience the same issue you pointed out here until v1.1.2 where they have been working correctly since.

BD subtitles and .ssa are 2 different things. Don't hijack threads...

Wasn't my intent.. both are subtitles with the same problem effects, one fixed. My thought was that even if they were handled by different modules, the fix in one (which I placed at the 1.1.2 release) might be portable to the other. Sorry if I lack intimite knowledge with this particular source code to know otherwise.

You might note that I kept the vast majority of my other issues in a separate thread (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=82050), besides reference to the general brokenness of 1.1.4, which went unanswered and I eventually solved wih a great deal of digging and a revert to 1.1.3. Perhaps that will be useful to some folk if the parallel I drew in this one to give you a starting point/reference for fixing these subtitles wasn't for you. heh

If you'd like an example of what thread hijacking is, we can start a discussion here on the fundamentals of piano practice. :p
