random plaback from double click .xspf

Postby slackard » 22 Jul 2010 08:34

vlc 1.1.1 on xp x64

did plenty of searching and found nothing pertaining to this specific issue.

playlist1.xspf contains 100+ files. I have random playback (tools -> optipons -> all -> playlist -> "play files randomly forever") selected in options.

Every time I start this playlist from windows explorer by double clicking playlist1.xspf, the first file in the playlist is ALWAYS played first, not a random one.

in versions past i could double click playlist1.xspf and a random file from the playlist would be chosen as the first file played.

Secondary, when i double click playlist1.xspf and the 1st file in the playlist is played, the next file is randomly chosen from the playlist, but always in the same order as the last time the last time i ran this playlist.. This is effectively NOT 'play randomly'. Its a shuffled order, shuffled in the same order every time.

EXAMPLE: 5 file playlist (file1.mpg, file2.mpg, etc.) named playlistA.xspf saved on desktop

specifiy play randomly forever in playlist settings.
double click playlistA.xspf and file1.mpg is played
click next track and file5.mpg is played
click next and file4.mpg is played.
close vlc
double click playlistA.xspf and file1.mpg is played
click next track and file5.mpg is played
click next and file4.mpg is played.
rinse repeat.

Same net effect in 100 or 1000+ file playlist

i wouldn't care if it would just start on a random file rather than the same (first file) in the playlist every time i double clicked the playlist1.xspf,

am i missing something?

thanks

This ticket (3932) has been marked as fixed and closed, but I am getting this exact same behavior with 1.1.4.

Everytime I double click on a playlist I get the exact same "random" order. Are other people seeing this still or is this just me?

I'm having the exact same issue too with version 1.1.4. It's damn irritating.

VLC is a great player but this "fake random" problem is really boring, would be great if fixed.

Moreover, if there are less then 5 files in the playlist while it's set to 'random', the VLC plays only one of them twice and stops.

I also find this behavior very problematic. I have a large number of video files of a certain series and the kids want to see a random one each time. while it is possible to set the default behavior to 'shuffle' the play order is the same every time completely defeating the purpose. I would expect a true randomization of the play order to be a rather simple operation and hope it will be done soon.
