Best VGA card for GPU Acceleration (and transcoding)

Postby nereikianieko » 19 Aug 2010 15:45

Has anyone really smooth video with any VGA card?
1. I would like to buy new VGA card, just still I'm not sure which and which series exactly is better: ATI or Nvidia?
Or maybe from 1.1.3 where are no issues with these cards?

2. Does GPU accelaration helps transcoding videos?

1) it is the same, check wikipedia to take the most recent versions. DO NOT take INTEL.
2) well, yes/no. It helps the decoding stage, but not the encoding one.

2. But there are some other tools that can use GPU acceleration during encoding also.

Could you please explain what do you mean by saying "other tools". Is it other software? I've made quite a lot research, but still does not succeeded to anything better than VLC for LIVE content transcoding.

Could you please write any name?

CUDA encoders (usable with new NVIDIA hardware) can be found from Badaboom, CyberLink PowerDirector 7, MediaCoder etc. but I don't know if there are any streaming solutions that support GPU encoding.

I've never used it but heard that the "ffdshow" codecs are fast. Maybe they're the same speed as VLC, maybe faster I dunno.

FFDshow is usually faster than VLC. But FFDshow doesn't have GPU acceleration for video encoding.

I guess you meant decoding [1]?

Thanks.

No. I really meant encoding since the discussion of this thread has been focused on GPU encoding.

And neither does VLC, right, or are you referring to VLC using the GPU for the phase of transcoding, whereas ffdshow doesn't?
Thanks.

I meant that the FFDshow doesn't have GPU acceleration (I didn't compare this feature to VLC). I only mentioned that since poster wanted to know tools that support GPU acceleration.
