how to install on red hat Linux 8

Hi everyone!

I have red hat linux 8 and wanted to install VLC on my system....i did wut ever is written on the site but still wasnt able to install VLC properly.
I downlaoded the fedora bincary packages and VLC rmp as well...unzipped them in the same directory and when i ran the rpm command with the same command line as mentioned i got following erors:

After that i added the --nodeps switch to the command line and it didny give any error ...but when i run VLC from terminal...i got following error again

vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libpth.so.20: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Welcome to RPM hell. Ok so you have missing dependent libraries. You have two options:

1. You can uninstall all of those RPM's and start over. If you go this route you will probably want to use the Red Hat packages instead of the Fedora Core set. You will probably still get some missing dependant packages but fewer of them.

or


2. You can keep going from where you are and install additional RPM's that have the missing libraries. Sites like http://www.rpmseek.com can be helpful for this. RPM's for the libdvd* packages can be found at http://developers.videolan.org/ the rest you will need to go hunt for.


P.S. In general the –nodeps flag is more trouble than it is worth. So try to avoid using it. If you get a failed dep listing go find the required RPM’s it will save you time in the long run.

I have tried to uninstall the vlc but it said vlc is not installed though i can saw vlc in the startup menu.I have the fedora dependencis and red hat package updates as well.i have unziiped them in the same directory and still rpm not runinng.I ll sheck that rpmsek site....thx anyway....anybiody else got any other idea

Yes you have the Fedora packages. But since you are running Red Hat 8.0 that doesnt do much for you. You need to insall RPM's that have the files that were listed as missing.

Also the fact that it shows up in the start menu is not proof that VLC is still installed. What response do you get when you type in vlc at the command line?

Well u r absolutely rite...i have red hat but it is mentioned on the site that use Fedora packages cauze they dont have any packages for RED hat distribution and unpack/untar the red hat update packages in the same directory and use command
# ] rpm -U vlc/* --force

when i enters this command nothing happens and it dorectly comes on the command line ie
[root@localhost root]#

After a number of attempts ..i dont know how but it did started installing and gave those errors that i have mentioned above....

As u aked that wut is the response after i type vlc in command line....it gives
