Echo/distorted audio after reinstalling graphics card

Postby kayleighraven » 15 Aug 2010 20:42

I searched the forum & FAQ but couldn't find anything that matched this. Apologies in advance if I've missed something.

I recently had to reinstall the drivers for my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 4600 series) due to a weird graphics glitch in a game. At first I updated to the latest ones but this didn't solve the problem so I was advised to uninstall then reinstall Catalyst version 10.2 (an older driver) to correct this and since then everything I play on VLC has echoing/distorted audio, all types of file including DVDs, but the video runs as normal.
I don't have any sound issues anywhere else - Mp3s etc. in winamp, sound in games, on youtube etc. play fine.
I'm running XP with a Realtek sound card.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Reset your VLC preferences.

Sorry, I should've mentioned I've tried reinstalling VLC (deleted all prefs & cache) but I just reset preferences anyway and no difference... :?

v1.1.5 has this problem.
v1.1.4 or v1.1.2 (at least) does not.

Some things I had tried on v1.1.5 but not work:
. reinstall video driver
. reinstall audio driver
. http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ#Cra ... _anomalies
- DirectX
- Simple DirectMedia Layer
- Win32 waveOut (does provide some improvement)
. tune video and audio preferences

However, if v1.1.5 playback speed is increased to 3x or 4x, audio echo disappears.

This is a regression in 1.1.5 and isn't the issue of this topic.

I just figured this out.

I have a MacBook Pro, but hopefully this works in windows, too

I followed the steps that almost all the other forums have for fixing these sound problems:

Go to "Preferences", select "Advanced" or "All"
Go to "Audio", to "Output modules"
Once there, select as the Audio output module "HAL AudioUnit output".

This fixed the sound echo for me, since the only options that I had in the drop down menu were "Default", "Dummy Audio Output function", "HAL AudioUnit output", and "File audio output".

Plus, DON'T change the output format under "Output modules / File". Leave it as the default/whatever the reset preferences puts it at. Mine is on "s16", with 0 channels, and "Add WAVE header" is selected.

I have: VLC Version 1.1.3 The Luggage (Intel 64bit)

Hope this helps someone!!
