VOB file playback error

I've been using mplayer's command line utilities on opensuse 11.3 64-bit to rip films from DVDs (just the main title). I've used the command

mencoder dvd://$TITLE -dvd-device /dev/sr0 -oac copy -ovc copy -alang en -slang en -vobsubout "$1" -o "$1".vob

and the ripping is fine, and kaffeine or mplayer or xine will play back the resulting .vob file without error. However VLC reports "VLC does not support the audio or video format..." This is VLC 1.1.0 under Linux or VLC 1.1.2 on Windows 7 (when file played by network share).

Is there any way around this?
