Cool.
Please update vlc to the latest 1.1.0-rc version

I'm trying to get this working on mythbuntu 10:04, have upgraded to VLC 1.1.2 and installed ffmpeg 0.6. I'm still not getting vdpau CPU use figures yet (H264 1080i test files). It seems I need to enable vaapi somewhere in preferences also, but I cannot find it. Can someone send me a screen dump of preferences where this is enabled, to help me find it? With many thanks.

The same thing.
I'm totally sure that vaapi works on my nvidia card.
mplayer-vaapi playing 1080i h.264 file with 10%-15% CPU usage. When vlc 35-55%(like mplayer without vaapi).

PS I tried compile vlc sources from debian repo and also try vlc 1.1.3 from debian squeeze with ffmpeg 0.6 from experimental

Sometimes VLC with vaapi works worse than without it. When vaapi enabled VLC use 60-70% of CPU, when disabled — 45-50% (1920x1080, h264 in .mkv container). Also I can upload a part of this file, if necessary.

Yes that is the sort of improvement I am also getting, seems its only partially working because mythtv vdpau achieves much lower CPU % for the same files. e.g. one H264 1080i clip wouldn't play smoothly with VLC before VAAPI, now plays with recent versions but ~80-90% CPU but seems much of a way to go to the mythtv achieving around 20% CPU only. This example is using a 2G C2Duo Intel CPU.

FWIW my configuration includes the default setting of "Accelerated Video Output (Overlay)" as found under Preferences / Video and also checking "Use GPU acceleration (experimental)" under Preferences / "Input / Codecs". Is this as others are doing?

Gentlemen,

I'm trying to compile the latest vlc (1.1.9) with the vaapi support on RHEL6.
Here are a few questions, that i hope can be easily resolved by you:
1. is this page is up-to-date - http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_VAAPI ?
2. This page http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_configure_help seemed to be outdated:
a. it states vlc version 0.9.0
b. list of the options is very much different from the 1.1.9 i have . Please take a look:

Code: Select all

/home/az/rpmbuild/SOURCES/vlc-1.1.9 [az@sl64 vlc-1.1.9]$ ./configure --help | grep -i FFMPEG --enable-merge-ffmpeg merge FFmpeg-based plugins (default disabled)
3. By reading on the forums and looking thru the vlc.spec (vlc-1.1.9/extras/package/rpm), it appears that ffmpeg is supported in two forms - "static" and "external". Where "static" is in the subdirectory (of vlc) and "external" is system based.
If the above statement is valid. How do i use the "external" ffmpeg?
here are the results of my attempts:

Code: Select all

+ ./configure --build=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu --host=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu --target=x86_64-redhat-l inux-gnu --program-prefix= --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin --sys confdir=/etc --datadir=/usr/share --includedir=/usr/include --libdir=/usr/lib64 --libexecdir=/usr/libex ec --localstatedir=/var --sharedstatedir=/var/lib --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --d isable-dependency-tracking --disable-rpath --disable-nls --disable-mozilla --disable-static --enable-aa --enable-alsa --enable-caca --enable-dirac --enable-dvbpsi --enable-dvdread --enable-faad --enable-fbo sd --enable-ffmpeg configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --enable-ffmpeg
and

Code: Select all

The ffmpeg (ffmpeg-0.6.1) was separately compiled (with --enable-vdpau --enable-vaapi) and installed onto the system.

4. There is also an error :

Code: Select all

I'm not sure if it's a game stopper or just a warning that can be ignored... Please advise.
Thank you
Andrew

... I guess Jean is mocking me ... uh,uh..
So i got to my home PC tonight and installed ffmpeg with --vaapi compiled. That, obviously, brought the vaapi package:

Run vainfo. If that works, run vlc --ffmpeg-hw and you'll have GPU decoding.

That's an issue with libva or your hardware then. Not much help to get from here.

Remi, you were right. I spent some silly time building rpms out of libva learning more than i ever wanted to know about packaging and gnu tools. But eventually i got it done. As always - once i've done it it appears an elementary and simple task...
Anyway. Here are some results:

Code: Select all

and with --ffmpeg-hw:

Code: Select all

it's interesting to note that on my system ( Sempron and GT240) in both cases the CPU usage is about the same ~25%.
Based on the log i assume that HW acceleration is used.
Two questions:
1. how do i check the GPU utilization?
2. how do i use vlc to transcode between two video file formats ( avi -> mpeg)?
Thank you.

1. I don't know
2. You don't need to transcode to change file formats. And there is a conversion wizard in the UI.

Remi,
i'm confused with your answer a bit. I read this before i started http://wiki.videolan.org/Transcode
.. So how do i convert the avi to mpg then?

RE: conversion from GUI.
I tried that - it doesn't seem to be working. The problem seemed to be with the missing " ' " in the parameters GUI passes to the vlc engine:
" cannot start stream output instance, aborting".

I ran cvlc --ffmpeg-hw A_File.avi --sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp1v,vb=1024,acodec=mpga,ab=128}:std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=./Trans_hw.mpg}'
cvlc A_File.avi --sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp1v,vb=1024,acodec=mpga,ab=128}:std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=./Trans.mpg}'

Here are some metrics:
to convert 668Mb avi file to mpg on 2Gb AMD Sempron 3200 system"
HW enabled transcoding ~ 40 minutes, CPU utilization ~80%
no HW enabled ~30 minutes, CPU utilization ~ 97% ( full load).

I also observed that vcl didn't give a handler back to command prompt thou the process was gone from the "top".

My expectation was that with the combination of vlc+vaapi+vdpau will take a full advantage of the powerful GPU ( GT240) and offload my old CPU (Sempron). According to "nvidia control panel" ( or whatever it's called ) the GPU didn't perform to the fullest.

I'm left wondering :
if the performance of vlc+vaapi is that low?
and what's the use of vaapi in vlc then?

2 year old post. No one having trouble with HW-acceleration with VLC any more?

VLC is terrible with playing HD video. Time seeking is a pain. CPU load is 50-80%. While using MPlayer/SMPlayer with VDPAU is a smooth experience. Seeking is instantaneous, while VLC freeze for 1-3 seconds between seeking before starting playback again (and sometimes VLC stops playing audio for a few seconds, or until I seek again). SMPlayer uses under 10% while playing full HD video.

I have enabled HW acceleration on VLC, but I have read that it does not support VDPAU 100% like other players as xine and mplayer. VLC is my favorite video player. I would hate to use any other instead for playing HD video.

I have a ASUS GeForce GTX 650Ti 1GB PhysX CUDA

VLC 2.1 supports VDPAU decoding, but (like MPlayer) it is disabled by default. Check your video preferences.

I compiled the latest version of VLC from GIT (--enable-vdpau) with the last version of ffmpeg with VDPAU without errors.
I Tried with - ffmpeg-hw, but the command.no longer exists.

How can I activate VDPAU in VLC?

VLC version: 2.1.0-pre1 Rincewind (revision 1.3.0-git-6842-g388b0b9)

I am trying to compile VLC git with vdpau support. However this compile error cam up:

# Check that we did not install a plugin linked with libX11 or
# libxcb in vlc-nox
BORKED=no; \
for file in $(find debian/vlc-nox/usr/lib/vlc -name '*.so'); do \
if objdump -x $file | egrep -q -e '^ +NEEDED +libX11\.so' \
-e '^ +NEEDED +libxcb\.so'; then \
BORKED=yes; \
echo $file depends on libX11 or libxcb; \
fi; \
done; \
if test "$BORKED" = yes; then exit 1; fi
debian/vlc-nox/usr/lib/vlc/plugins/codec/libvdpau_plugin.so depends on libX11 or libxcb
make[1]: *** [override_dh_install] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/build/vlc/vlc-2.1.0'
make: *** [binary] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: error: fakeroot debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2

Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks.

Use VLC 2.2.0 and build without the Debian method.
