A really really daft question

I think VLC is absolutely brilliant but I do have a really really daft question.

When I run VLC on my windows machine at home I can stop and start my video at any point, I can also jump up and down the timeline without issue. However, under Linux [Ubuntu]. The video either wants to only restart from the beginning all the time or if I do manage to jump down through the timeline the video breaks up or pauses the audio carries on regardless.

I relaise that these are two totally different platforms but I sort of expected the same functionality. Any suggestions?

Are you sure you have the same version of vlc on windows and ubuntu ?
I don't think so.

Version 1 on Windows and version 1.1.1 on Ubuntu.

Does it happen with just one video?

It's probably a different version of the underlying library that parses the file, such as libavformat.

I am not sure if something has changed but I now notice that I can no longer jump along the timeline at random points any more. I am playing several AVIs, it doesn't matter if the file is local or on a network drive, the moment I jump down the timeline VLC freezes. At some point in time it manages to show the point I jumped to but it doesn't continue to play.
The same videos all play using Windows Video Player, Gom Player, Real Player and I can bounce anywhere in the timeline without issue and they all instantly carry on.

Any suggestions? Using 1.1.11

Maybe it's a problem with your video card. Have you tried uncheking "Use video acceleration" in your VLC settings?

Tried it on 4 different machines and I get the same results.
