VLC Contrast Issue

I recently installed VLC and really like it, but I decided to fire up a video in both VLC and WMP12. WMP12's contrast looks much better. I can't believe that people watch videos in VLC with the default settings if they look like this? Is there something I can change on the VLC Video output to match WMP12?

Yes you can adjust contrast, brightness in VLC, please have a look at the following pictures :

Step 1 :

Menu Tool => Effects and Filters => Video Effects => Tick Image Adjust => Move the sliders in Contrast, Brightness etc...
(as you can see in the pic, I always add a bit of brightness)

Step 2 :
But...you have (unfortunately) a 2nd step to think about, as shown in the following pic :

Menu Tools => Preferences => Save

If you forget Step 2, then the adjustments you made in Step 1 will disappear during your future VLC sessions and you'll have to readjust them all again.
I never understood why VLC requires 2 steps to modify basic effects, then save preferences in another menu, when many other software require only one step, here is an example in the following pic :

It's an old ACDSee version (an image viewer) and as you see in the pic, you can save defaults in the same screen where you tick the options you need, which means :
* You click their "Ok" button if you want to use the modifications for this session only
* Or you click "Save Defaults" if you want those modifications to become default for the future

But their both options ("Ok" / "Save defaults") are in the SAME screen, which unfortunately is not the case in VLC
j-b is aware of this request, but maybe it's more complicated in VLC to add a "Save default" button inside the "Adjustment and Effects" window (the pic in Step 1)

Well, if you have nVidia, just deactivate RGB->YUV conversions in preferences.

@solazy - Thank you! A couple of small tweaks to contrast, brightness and saturation and it looks better than the defaults in WMP12.

Extremely right, but what a pity i noticed that annoyance after having VLC more than a year! Because i don't watch too much video. WMP 12 in Windows 7 has VERY VERY better contrast/brightness combination when compared to VLC's default. VLC videos are much brighter and less contrast wheres WMP 12 is almost perfect!
