I've been using VLC since I first discovered around 2002 or maybe 3. I can honestly say, sadly each version is getting worse and worse. One of the attractive things about VLC was that it played almost everything and there was a high degree of customization. IMHO VLC has gotten into the "addition by subtraction" method of development. Thread after thread is filled with people wondering why they cannot do something that they could before. That is, where is the "X" feature. The ability to watch movies without a control border was the selling point for me some years ago. I like to watch movies. Im NOT interested in watching the application or its controls. I cannot understand how removing a feature such as resizing while the 'controls on window' option is disable could sound like a good idea.
As of now VLC (version 0.8.6) is the last useable version of the app that actually works the way I need it to. Every release since then has had something removed, altered or changed with no real rhyme or reason. I was afraid of the direction this app was taking back when the playlist was modified from a separate window to an expanding UPWARD window. In addition, answers along the lines of 'you can't do that because it wont let you do that' is a bit insulting considering that the people posting are typically asking why they can't or how to do what they've done in prior versions.
While I don't agree with the supermatt's tone in the thread titled "GARBAGE", I completely understand his anger. This was THE MUST HAVE APP when moving to Mac OS X. Now its turned into "the app that will piss you off because it no longer does what it used to do".
I applaud the developers who put many man hours into a labor of love and can understand not wanting to be abused. But I believe there's much to be said for these wise words passed down throughout the ages.
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
