VLC 1.1: This application has requested the Runtime...

Postby Xavier51 » 26 Jun 2010 10:41

Good morning,

Every time when I start VLC I get the following warning:

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
When I click OK, I get the warning VLC.exe is not working. VLC.exe will be closed.

Pls help me, because I like the VLC-program.

regards

I removed the vlc folder in appdata/roaming. Every time when I start VLC the folder vlc is back in appdata/vlc.

Meanwhile I've reinstalled vlc more than 5 times. I always get the same problem.

I am experiencing the same error.

Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit
VLC 1.1.0
Error appears on launching the program for the first time and every subsequent launch. I initially see the confirmation dialog box asking about downloading content and updates but the program crashes instantly.

Removed %appdata%\vlc
Uninstalled, reinstalled, same behavior.

Event log records this:

Faulting application name: vlc.exe, version: 1.1.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c1eb4b8
Faulting module name: libqt4_plugin.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c1eb4c0
Exception code: 0x40000015
Fault offset: 0x000038df
Faulting process id: 0xf00
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb15a0af8490a0
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\libqt4_plugin.dll

Happy to provide additional details.

Do you run some custom Windows skin engine, or do you have drawing tablet connected to your PC?

I had this same problem after I upgraded to 1.10 today. The My Documents folder had gotten corrupted a few days back and I never fixed it. When I fixed the My Documents folder (it was located on an SD card that had gone bad -- I restored it back to the default location), this problem went away. I'm guessing the program may be looking in My Documents for My Videos or something. Anyway, hope that helps.

I do have a file "Video" in Mydocuments on c:\. That's not causing the problem.
Does anybody know what is causing this problem?

Does anybody know an other media player with the same possibilities than VLC?
Windows media player is no option?

Thanks in advance

I've just downloaded VLC version 1.0.5. This version is working as it should do.

Thank you all for trying to solve this problem.

I do not have any custom skins or drawing tablets connected. This is was a fresh install of Win7 32-bit from an Enterprise LiteTouch deployment.

Following Xavier's lead I was also able to download and install VLC 1.0.5 successfully.
Afterward I ran the VLC 1.1.0 upgrade from there, and I am happy to report VLC 1.1.0 successfully installed and ran for me. It spent a few minutes rebuilding my font cache and the file extension associations didn't update, but at least it runs!

Make sure that your My Documents folder is configured properly and accessible. I get the exact same error when the encrypted disk containing My Documents isn't mounted. When I mount it, VLC works fine. When it's unmounted I get that error every time.

EricBishop!! I think you've hit the solution in my case as well. In our environment we usually redirect My Documents to our network server. It wasn't supposed to be redirected on this laptop, but I think I've found some registry entries that indicate that it is still getting redirected. VLC 1.1.0 installed and ran properly for me earlier because I was back in the office when I tried it. Back at home it crashes again with the same error (though actually plays in the background until I click "OK" on the error message). When connected to our VPN, VLC 1.1.0 works properly again. Back in the office on Tuesday, I'll turn off the group policies that redirect My Docs and see if that fixes the problem permanently.

j-b: who are you asking? I'd be happy to help in any way that I can.

Cool. Can you delete libmediadirs_plugin.dll from vlc plugins/ dir (C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins or C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins) and try it to see if it fixes your issue?

Please?

I am getting the exact same error and it seems to be the same issue. We use re-directed home folders and if I am logged in via LAN or VPN it works fine.
Otherwise, I get the crash. This is on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Deleting (or moving) the mentioned .dll file does not help.

My results were the same. Deleting the libmediadirs_plugin.dll file had no noticeable change in behavior.

Ok. %appdata%/vlc is local, though?

if you launch vlc with no interface, does it crash?
vlc.exe -Irc from command line, for example?

They're running in the background. So I think that works.

Thanks for the testing.

Can you try vlc.exe --no-qt-autoload-extensions ?

Run VLC once and make it work. Then quit
Open in %appdata%/vlc the vlc-qt-interface.ini (or similar)
Change the filedialog-path to something different like C:\ or else.

Re-run VLC in the way it should crash usually.
