conerting from avi to mpeg

Hi,

Can I use VLC to convert from avi to mpeg ? I tryed to open an avi (which plays ok) and stream it to a file, but the the mpeg does not play.
What video and audio codec should be used for the conversion ?

Try MP1V or MP2V as video codec, mpga as audio codec and MPEG-PS as encapsulation
