How does VLC 5.1 sound conversion to stereo works?

Hello fellow VLC developers and enthusiasts.

I've a little question about how VLC handles the downmixing of 5.1 surround sound. Does it uses any spatial filter? Does the configuration in Detailed Preferences->Audio->Filters->Spatial affects anything with this conversion?

Does the Headphone Spatial mode works with this conversion also?

Currently it sounds a little muffled and a much lower volume than just discarding the remaining channels. But of course, half of the sounds goes away too...

Any tips are appreciated!
