Dynamically changing VLC Audio Output

I have a Mobo with an audio chipset outputting via S/PDIF, and another Audio Chipset on ATI GPU Card outputting via HDMI. When I try to change Audio Output in VLC Prefs, it doesn't apply until the PC is rebooted. This is extremely inconvenient - to reboot the PC for each video program, since many require just TV Speakers to listen to via ATI HDMI audio, while for some AC3 sound is available via S/PDIF, and requires to use AVR. Is there a way to dynamically change VLC Audio Output and why, if not? I don't want to change the default audio device in Windows all the time.

VLC restart is only thing needed. PC rebooted isn't.

Is there a way to upgrade the program to allow dynamically change Audio Output without its restart? To check quickly, if another Output sounds better for a particular movie? Even while the movie is playing in VLC without stopping it? When one restarts VLC, it starts playing the same file from the beginning instead of continue from the stop point. I know, no restart is needed to change Audio Output in some soft Music Players.

Restart is needed in many cases, since most VLC plugins don't contain callbacks.
