Right Hotkey not working (VLC 1.1.0)

Postby abhiroopb » 24 Jun 2010 14:18

I have VLC running on Windows 7 x64 PC.

I just updated to VLC 1.1.0 and now one of the hotkeys is not working.

I generally bind the left cursor key to "very short backward jump" and the right cursor key to "very short forward jump". This worked fine in VLC 1.0.

Since upgrading to VLC 1.1.0 the left cursor works fine but the right cursor does nothing.

If I set the right cursor to very short forward jump" GLOBAL, it works fine. However, I do not want it to be "GLOBAL" I want it to only work when VLC is in focus.

Any suggestions as to why this has broken?

Thanks!

so a quick scan of the board shows 3 threads already for hot key bugs in 1.10

one poster cant get his left arrow to work but his right arrow is OK - another has a working left arrow but a broken right arrow.

I have both of those working but my up/down are now misbehaving. I had no problems with 1.01, 1.02. 1.03, 1.05

surely these issues need to be addressed togewther not treated as separate bugs.

hot keys code & preferences storage urgently needs a quality assurance review

and please don't tell me to file a bug report - I go to that trac link, click new bug report & get told I don't have the privilege of filing one!

"Error: Forbidden
TICKET_CREATE privileges are required to perform this operation

TracGuide — The Trac User and Administration Guide
"
EDIT - make that 4 threads. there's another poster who says that both left AND right keys are now broken for him.

Did you create an account?

It was relatively easy for me!

no i did not create an account - no-one told me I needed to & the error message just said forbidden - go away.

I can't beleive how painful the error reporting is becoming.

I've now devoted 2 hours to tring to report bugs. grapple with screen grab, grapple with shrink / convert/ save the .bmp via office picture manager - try to upload the image, which is allowed on just about every board I've used except this one... explain in great detail on this board what I think the probem is ... go from pc to pc to compare 1.05 with 1.10 i.e. double check my facts before typing....
( as per the developers sig. VLC media player developer and Sites administrator : "If you want an answer to your question, just be specific and verbose. Don't PM" )

then get single word responces (pix) or bare links e.g. http...trac
i.e.
go host your picture over there, cos we won't let you upload it, go file the bug somewhere else, cos reporting it here at the forum is no longer good enough

there was a time when raising bugs via this forum was met with a polite thank you, we'll look into it - not a terse go file . ( with an implied - we probably don't beleive you & probably won't do anything about it, as there's already 3 similar threads.... )

well thanks for nothing - I'll check out the next release ( maybe), but I'm through with trying to help.

if you go to ~\Library\Preferences\org.videolan.vlc\vlcrc and use TextEdit to edit the vlcrc file, you can change the hotkeys. I would recommend using cmd+F to search for "Long" and it will take you to long jump forward. The thing to note is that long jump forward (key-jump+long) and long jump backward (key-jump-long) have a # symbol next to them. This means that they are being interpreted as comments, not as code. If you delete the # symbol, you should be good to go.

Note: Option-Left is written as Alt-Left in this document. Option-right = Alt-Right, etc.

Also, if you change any other hotkeys using the VLC interface rather than this document method, you will end up overwriting the commands for long jump forward and long jump backward (and perhaps others, those are just the only ones I use).

It's a workaround, not a fix.

So can I fix "very short jump forward" with your workaround? That's the only one I have a problem with.

Just make sure that no other command is using the key combination. Change any duplicates to "Unset" (capital U) or something else. Then cmd-s to save the document and restart VLC. It has worked for me so far.

I just wanted to update this thread - v1.1.2 doesn't fix this problem.

VLC 1.1.2, running on Win7 Pro 64-bit.

Hi I am using VLC 1.1.2 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I have a similar yet opposite problem. I set shortbackward jump hotkey to my left arrow and it doesn't work. It doesn't even work even if I set it global. However, all other hotkeys work.

Just upgraded to v1.1.3.

This bug is still present. :(

Edit: v1.1.4. Still no change. Arrow keys remain borked.

I have the same problem but only with Left Key. VLC didn't fixed it even in v1.1.4. My habbit is to keep backup of previous working version. So, I am using v1.0.5 now which is good enough for me and working fine.

I am more any more tempted to revert to 1.05 & forget the whole 1.1... series.

not for this specific bug but for the whole slew of reported bugs which seem to be getting worse with eash release. I quit updating at 1.12 but the horror stories continue from users who went to 1.13, 1.14.

whatever happened to QA & to the concept of test it BEFORE you release it ???

I've yet to discover ANY added value in 1.1... versus the 1.0 series

Hi, does anyone find out how to fix this problem yet? My Left and Down key don't work correctly on 1.1.4 :( This only happens after I reinstall Windows, before it was okay...

Yep, I have 1.1.5. Arrow keys used as hotkeys are not working... save for one.. right arrow: very short forward jump.

When I originally set the hotkeys the "very short backward jump" using left arrow worked, and the rest didn't. But for every subsequent time I open VLC its only the right arrow that works.

up arrow for pause and down arrow for play never worked. I'm not even able to set these as global keys since that function ceases to work altogether.

I'm no programmer but this seems like it would be an easy fix. I don't see how this could not be fixed update after update

And why would I file a bug if so many people already have, and nothing has come of it?

Are you sure you removed navigate left from left arrow and then set it to new action?

Yes, but it wont work
Why left and right arrow cant be as default in very short jump instead navigate?
This isnt a new problem, i can remember it some years ago when this was VideoLAN Client and it is allways right arrow

OMG I feel not only like a complete ass, but a complete --please stay polite--.

That is what the problem was. I am so used to programs automatically reassigning buttons when I choose my new hotkey. I had no idea I would have to manually unassign the button from its previous function.

I got a warning dialogue saying that the button was already assigned to another function, but I thought clicking "Ok" was simply acknowledging that its previous assignment would be removed.

Sorry, and thanks... btw you might want to change that in the next update.. You shouldn't be able to double assign keys.
