Subtitles not working (using .srt file)

Postby StupidUser » 17 Jun 2010 02:21

Hi. I hope I posted this in the right place. I did not find info I could use searching this forum for 'subtitles'.

I have a movie.AVI file. I went to the web and found what I think is a subtitle file. It's called movie.English.SRT. The format of the .srt file is below. I started playing the movie, I clicked Video - Subtitles Track - Open File...
I selected movie.English.SRT. If I look at that menu item now, "Track 1" is selected.

I am using VLC 1.0.5 Goldeneye. I am running WinVista x64 Ultimate.

The subtitles do not appear. Is this the right type of file? What did I do wrong?

Thanks for your help.

.SRT file contents

2
00:02:26,880 --> 00:02:28,541
My brother wants to know...

3
00:02:28,748 --> 00:02:32,081
...have you ever tried liquid MDMA?

... (rest of the file left out since you don't want to see the whole thing)

Usually if the avi file and the srt have the same name and palced in the same folder VLC opens the .srt file directly when double clicking on the video file. (no need to open it in the menu)
I've just made a test to verify it.

are your sure both files have exactly the same name (before the extention of course) and placed in the same folder ?

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before you load subtitles, it should complain if something goes wrong.

The files do not have the same filename (before the extension). I tested setting the move and subtitle file to the same filename (pre extension). Video-Subtitles was set to Track 1 automatically when I started the movie (as you suggested), but I did not get any subtitles.

Using the original file names, I set Message level to verbosity 2 and then loaded the subtitle file. The output seems to show some type of error, but I do not understand it. Here is what I got:

It should work. Could you share us the subtitle file?

I do not see how to upload files here. I'll try to cut and paste the whole thing in.

Edit: I think I loaded it into a file hosting site: http://www.mediafire.com/file/3jynjvoyyoa/Syriana.srt

I notice the following anomalies:
-The last line just has a number. No time or subtitle
-The .srt goes until 2 hrs 17 minutes. The .avi file goes to 2 hrs 7 min. (and 43 sec)

What did he say? l can't hear.

18
00:14:23,729 --> 00:14:25,128
He's telling us to scram.

19
00:14:25,298 --> 00:14:26,492
''Scram''?

20
00:14:27,333 --> 00:14:30,063
What do you mean, ''scram''?

21
00:14:30,336 --> 00:14:36,036
Your immigration permit through
this company is no longer valid.

22
00:14:36,208 --> 00:14:41,942
You must report to the Department
of lmmigration within two weeks...

...or you may be deported.

24
00:14:48,521 --> 00:14:52,287
The Chinese are smart people,
but such bad drivers.

25
00:14:52,458 --> 00:14:55,757
They should not be allowed
even to wash cars.

26
00:14:58,631 --> 00:15:03,261
When l was your age, in Pakistan,
there was always in the distance....

00:15:03,836 --> 00:15:07,169
Snow-covered mountains.
Yes, l know, Papa.

28
00:15:07,340 --> 00:15:08,739
That's right.

29
00:15:09,375 --> 00:15:13,368
Three hours away, but right there...

30
00:15:14,213 --> 00:15:16,477
...across the entire sky...

31
00:15:16,749 --> 00:15:20,185
...like you could reach out
and touch them.

32
00:15:20,853 --> 00:15:23,720
Snow-covered mountains.

33
00:15:27,827 --> 00:15:29,761
As soon as we can...

34
00:15:29,929 --> 00:15:33,490
...we'll get a house and bring
your mother here.

35
00:15:34,367 --> 00:15:36,130
l promise.

Princeton, New Jersey

38

Marbella, Spain

39
00:21:37,730 --> 00:21:41,666
It is my pleasure to personally welcome
each of you...

40
00:21:43,135 --> 00:21:44,762
...to the Casa de las Palmas...

41
00:21:45,070 --> 00:21:47,265
...our oasis of palms in the south of Spain.

42
00:21:49,975 --> 00:21:55,607
I hope everyone is having
a wonderful day...

43
00:21:56,281 --> 00:22:01,981
...and taking time from your hectic lives
to relax with friends and family...

44
00:22:02,287 --> 00:22:06,781
...whether it is enjoying the flowers in our
bountiful gardens...

45
00:22:07,059 --> 00:22:11,792
...or sampling the myriad delicacies...

46
00:22:11,997 --> 00:22:16,058
...prepared by chefs from
our prosperous home.

47
00:22:17,102 --> 00:22:20,401
Please eat and socialize...

48
00:22:20,973 --> 00:22:25,603
...and enjoy your time with us.

49
00:22:30,315 --> 00:22:33,978
l am happy to welcome the Chinese
to my country.

50
00:23:49,895 --> 00:23:51,192
An announcement.

51
00:23:52,564 --> 00:23:54,862
lf man is made in God's image...

52
00:23:55,033 --> 00:23:58,901
...then God is deeply messed up.

53
00:24:07,713 --> 00:24:09,078
You afraid?

54
00:24:09,314 --> 00:24:10,303
Afraid of the buzz?

55
00:24:10,482 --> 00:24:11,949
l'm afraid of your breath.

56
00:24:12,117 --> 00:24:15,086
Hakim hasn't had any.
And he wears jewelry.

57
00:24:15,254 --> 00:24:20,214
He thinks that little bracelet's gonna
get him girls.

58
00:24:20,626 --> 00:24:21,854
Hakim!

59
00:24:22,027 --> 00:24:24,587
Hakim! Hakim! Hakim!

60
00:24:27,966 --> 00:24:30,298
l want to talk to your uncle about work.

61
00:24:30,469 --> 00:24:32,528
There isn't any work.

62
00:24:32,838 --> 00:24:33,896
Farooq!

63
00:24:34,072 --> 00:24:35,198
You said you'd introduce me.

64
00:24:35,474 --> 00:24:36,702
Don't be such a pest.

65
00:26:05,330 --> 00:26:07,423
This house is a Genius-Home.

66
00:26:07,666 --> 00:26:10,362
One of my sons had it wired by experts
from the United States.

67
00:26:10,636 --> 00:26:11,625
Watch.

68
00:26:20,012 --> 00:26:22,776
Your Highness, that is incredible.

69
00:26:23,849 --> 00:26:27,683
Prince Nasir, isn't that amazing?

70
00:26:29,187 --> 00:26:30,381
Fascinating.

71
00:26:31,523 --> 00:26:34,151
The Chinese take the trouble
to learn Arabic.

72
00:26:34,426 --> 00:26:36,053
Look, it's getting dark.

73
00:26:36,261 --> 00:26:38,456
Better turn on the pool lights.

74
00:26:47,172 --> 00:26:50,005
Send a fool on a fool's errand.

75
00:26:50,409 --> 00:26:54,038
Moussa, come fix this remote control!

76
00:28:54,299 --> 00:28:55,527
Washington, DC

77
00:31:01,259 --> 00:31:04,751
Two of my wife's kids were deported
from this country.

78
00:31:04,930 --> 00:31:06,989
You know why?
Because they didn't have work.

79
00:31:07,165 --> 00:31:08,632
You don't have to pay me.

80
00:31:08,800 --> 00:31:11,769
Give me something to do.

81
00:31:12,437 --> 00:31:14,064
Then decide.

82
00:31:15,540 --> 00:31:20,443
l'm sorry. l already have a
long list for that job too.

83
00:31:20,612 --> 00:31:23,843
And if you want to work in this country...

84
00:31:24,015 --> 00:31:25,380
...learn the language.

85
00:31:25,550 --> 00:31:27,814
Learn Arabic!

86
00:31:32,524 --> 00:31:36,290
Foreign workers' compound
The Persian Gulf

87
00:31:43,702 --> 00:31:45,294
Why are they running?

88
00:31:46,504 --> 00:31:48,495
Maybe the small one...

89
00:31:49,341 --> 00:31:52,674
...committed a crime or something.

90
00:31:57,015 --> 00:32:00,280
They gave us french fries
at the lslamic school.

91
00:32:05,023 --> 00:32:07,287
Close the door, Papa.

92
00:32:08,526 --> 00:32:11,120
His sister has a thing for you.

93
00:32:11,496 --> 00:32:13,930
His sister has a big ass.

94
00:32:14,165 --> 00:32:17,328
Of course, at the lslamic school you
don't have to worry about that.

95
00:32:17,502 --> 00:32:20,471
And lamb. We got skewers of lamb.

96
00:32:21,106 --> 00:32:22,903
l like lamb.

97
00:32:29,748 --> 00:32:34,208
Have your identification card ready.
No talking in line.

98
00:32:36,354 --> 00:32:41,656
Have your identification card ready.
No talking in line.

99
00:32:44,062 --> 00:32:46,394
l can't remember it this hot.

100
00:32:46,564 --> 00:32:49,124
Old man, you don't want to talk here.

101
00:32:49,300 --> 00:32:50,289
Stop talking.

102
00:32:53,238 --> 00:32:55,206
Tough guy.
What's your name?

103
00:32:55,707 --> 00:32:56,696
What's your name?!

104
00:35:45,910 --> 00:35:48,777
U.S. Department of Justice
Washington, DC

105
00:39:52,857 --> 00:39:55,087
They will try to disguise the difference...

106
00:39:55,326 --> 00:39:58,693
...to make Muslims who speak
about religion...

107
00:39:58,963 --> 00:40:01,955
...appear to be fanatics
or backward people.

108
00:40:02,133 --> 00:40:06,399
They will tell us the dispute is over
economic resources...

109
00:40:06,871 --> 00:40:08,532
...or military domination.

110
00:40:08,806 --> 00:40:12,503
lf we believe that,
we play right into their hands...

111
00:40:13,177 --> 00:40:17,045
...with only ourselves to blame.

112
00:40:17,548 --> 00:40:19,015
lt is not possible...

113
00:40:19,217 --> 00:40:22,015
...to bridge the divide
between human nature...

114
00:40:22,420 --> 00:40:25,184
...and modern life through free trade.

115
00:40:25,356 --> 00:40:26,448
lmpossible.

116
00:40:26,891 --> 00:40:31,453
The divine and the worldly
are but a single concept.

117
00:40:32,196 --> 00:40:33,686
The Koran.

118
00:40:34,232 --> 00:40:38,794
No separation of religion and state.

119
00:40:40,037 --> 00:40:41,334
The Koran.

120
00:40:42,340 --> 00:40:45,503
lnstead of kings legislating
and slaves obeying...

121
00:40:46,377 --> 00:40:48,004
...the Koran.

122
00:40:48,846 --> 00:40:51,815
The pain of modern life
cannot be cured by...

123
00:40:52,016 --> 00:40:53,745
...deregulation...

124
00:40:53,918 --> 00:40:55,249
...privatization...

125
00:40:55,586 --> 00:40:56,644
...economic reform...

126
00:40:57,088 --> 00:40:58,521
...or lower taxes.

127
00:40:59,624 --> 00:41:03,151
The pain of living in the modern world...

128
00:41:03,394 --> 00:41:05,828
...will never be solved by a liberal society.

129
00:41:09,033 --> 00:41:11,627
Liberal societies have failed.

130
00:41:12,069 --> 00:41:14,230
Christian theology has failed.

131
00:41:14,739 --> 00:41:16,604
The West has failed.

132
00:41:23,114 --> 00:41:24,342
Cap d'Antibes, France

133
00:46:07,198 --> 00:46:11,635
Your generosity is bigger than a mountain
that shades us from the burning sun.

134
00:46:12,169 --> 00:46:15,002
My house has grown too small
for my family.

135
00:46:15,172 --> 00:46:19,006
lf we had more land...

136
00:46:19,176 --> 00:46:21,804
...then my son could build his own house.

137
00:49:20,691 --> 00:49:24,525
777 Ranch
Hondo, Texas

138
00:50:55,185 --> 00:50:56,413
Rockville, Maryland

139
00:52:25,642 --> 00:52:29,942
Hezbollah-controlled suburb
Beirut, Lebanon

140
00:53:09,553 --> 00:53:11,418
Said Hashimi. Said Hashimi.

00:53:13,357 --> 00:53:15,985
l'm Canadian. lt's okay. Canadian.

142
00:53:11,588 --> 00:53:13,180
Said Hashimi.

143
00:54:22,025 --> 00:54:25,893
l have a good feeling
about American people, Bob.

144
00:54:26,330 --> 00:54:27,991
A good people.

145
00:54:28,365 --> 00:54:32,267
There are 1 0 million Muslims
in the U.S.

146
00:54:35,405 --> 00:54:37,464
Thank you for this audience.

147
00:54:37,674 --> 00:54:41,235
l have a business proposal for Mussawi,
one that benefits everyone.

148
00:54:41,778 --> 00:54:44,542
Mussawi is an energetic young man.

149
00:54:44,948 --> 00:54:47,746
Your Arabic is very good.

150
00:54:49,186 --> 00:54:53,520
l thought it would be prudent to say that
l have no interest in Hezbollah.

151
00:54:53,757 --> 00:54:56,351
This is business
and it doesn't concern Hezbollah.

152
00:55:05,202 --> 00:55:07,932
lf what you say is true...

153
00:55:08,705 --> 00:55:11,299
...consider yourself welcome in Lebanon.

154
00:55:11,641 --> 00:55:16,044
They can lift 1 0 times their weight,
and jump 20 times their height.

155
00:55:16,213 --> 00:55:18,044
But l still don't understand....

156
00:55:18,315 --> 00:55:21,512
The spider is a symbol
of the sin of man.

157
00:55:21,918 --> 00:55:24,716
He bites the finger of Peter Parker...

158
00:55:24,888 --> 00:55:27,584
...who is now half dark and half light.

159
00:55:28,792 --> 00:55:34,162
A real spider captures, stings
and immobilizes...

160
00:55:34,798 --> 00:55:39,531
...then watches
as the prey takes days to die.

161
00:55:41,271 --> 00:55:43,762
They'd never show that.

162
00:55:51,248 --> 00:55:52,237
Are we in trouble?

163
00:55:52,416 --> 00:55:53,713
Peace be upon you, boys.

164
00:55:54,618 --> 00:55:55,880
No, it's not a problem.

165
00:55:57,854 --> 00:55:58,843
Look around you...

166
00:55:59,523 --> 00:56:05,359
...at your brothers united by faith in God
and submission to his law.

167
00:56:12,169 --> 00:56:14,694
We're all brothers.

168
00:56:14,871 --> 00:56:16,498
We're one family.

169
00:56:17,774 --> 00:56:18,968
Wasim is still a virgin.

170
00:56:20,510 --> 00:56:21,534
That is good.

171
00:56:22,345 --> 00:56:24,210
Fornication is a serious crime.

172
00:56:27,384 --> 00:56:28,408
l'm a virgin too.

173
00:56:29,019 --> 00:56:30,350
That is good as well.

174
00:56:31,321 --> 00:56:32,948
''Abstain from **Stay polite ** out of wedlock.

175
00:56:33,190 --> 00:56:34,851
lt is an attack on honor...

176
00:56:35,025 --> 00:56:36,492
...and shows contempt for sanctity.''

177
00:56:36,660 --> 00:56:38,287
God has spoken the truth.

178
00:56:40,697 --> 00:56:43,359
Let us pray together.

179
00:58:45,188 --> 00:58:48,419
We begin the process of empowering
a new generation of Arabs....

180
00:59:21,057 --> 00:59:24,686
--however, unlike Washington's
Greater Middle East lnitiative...

181
00:59:27,230 --> 00:59:31,189
...we respect each country's right
to move at its own pace.

182
01:00:11,708 --> 01:00:13,232
Make room.

183
01:07:32,433 --> 01:07:35,561
Said Hashimi is very angry with you,
Mussawi.

184
01:07:35,903 --> 01:07:38,770
Said Hashimi keeps his word.

185
01:07:38,973 --> 01:07:41,806
You're a guest of Hezbollah too, Mussawi.

186
01:08:11,772 --> 01:08:15,230
l'm going to show you
something really cool.

187
01:08:30,157 --> 01:08:33,490
American-made. Good quality...

188
01:08:34,995 --> 01:08:37,589
...but nearly impossible to hit anything.

189
01:08:42,703 --> 01:08:44,694
By shaping the charge...

190
01:08:45,506 --> 01:08:48,964
...this will send a blast
of molten copper...

191
01:08:49,910 --> 01:08:53,641
...through 30 inches of steel.

192
01:09:10,364 --> 01:09:11,831
Careful!

193
01:09:12,866 --> 01:09:14,959
lt's very dangerous.

194
01:11:32,306 --> 01:11:35,605
Walter Reed Hospital
Washington, DC

195
01:15:53,200 --> 01:15:54,428
Geneva, Switzerland

196
01:16:07,414 --> 01:16:09,041
l want to see my father.

197
01:16:09,783 --> 01:16:10,875
l'm sorry, Your Highness.

198
01:16:11,051 --> 01:16:13,849
Your father is not feeling well.

199
01:21:36,109 --> 01:21:41,308
When I die I want the people who inherit
my possessions to do the following.

200
01:21:41,614 --> 01:21:42,603
One...

201
01:21:42,782 --> 01:21:45,808
...the people who prepare my body
should be good Muslims...

202
01:21:46,519 --> 01:21:50,819
...so this will remind me of God
and his forgiveness.

203
01:21:50,990 --> 01:21:51,979
Two...

204
01:21:52,158 --> 01:21:56,288
...I don't want anyone to rip their clothes
or slap their faces...

205
01:21:56,696 --> 01:21:58,459
...because this is an ignorant thing to do.

206
01:21:58,865 --> 01:21:59,854
Three...

207
01:22:00,033 --> 01:22:04,333
...I don't want a pregnant woman to come
and say goodbye to me...

208
01:22:04,504 --> 01:22:06,301
...because I don't approve it.

209
01:22:07,407 --> 01:22:08,396
Four....

210
01:29:48,167 --> 01:29:50,727
lt's okay. Hey, hey.

211
01:30:34,480 --> 01:30:35,845
What's up?

212
01:30:40,786 --> 01:30:43,118
lf l truly lack faith...
213

01:30:44,790 --> 01:30:47,281
...then l am not the right person.

214
01:30:47,894 --> 01:30:51,625
The questioning means
that you have faith...

215
01:30:51,797 --> 01:30:53,697
...and makes it stronger.

216
01:30:54,400 --> 01:30:56,698
That's a lot of --please stay polite--, l think.

217
01:30:59,505 --> 01:31:02,941
We'll be able to intervene in the
affairs of family members.

218
01:31:04,410 --> 01:31:07,004
We'll be able to help them with
whatever they need.

219
01:31:07,513 --> 01:31:10,107
You'll be able to get your mother here.

220
01:31:39,512 --> 01:31:40,911
Please.

221
01:31:45,885 --> 01:31:47,682
l am tired.

222
01:31:48,087 --> 01:31:49,349
Father...

223
01:31:51,057 --> 01:31:52,991
...who will be emir?

224
01:31:58,264 --> 01:32:00,027
Your brother.

225
01:32:00,199 --> 01:32:01,598
Praise be to God.

226
01:32:02,101 --> 01:32:05,229
l would ask you to remain
as foreign minister.

227
01:32:05,404 --> 01:32:07,736
You cannot do this.

228
01:32:09,041 --> 01:32:13,273
He is barely qualified to run a brothel,
much less a country.

229
01:32:16,415 --> 01:32:18,747
l like Europe.

230
01:32:19,919 --> 01:32:22,581
l will be happy to stay here.

231
01:32:25,157 --> 01:32:27,250
My decision is final...

232
01:32:27,426 --> 01:32:31,021
...and l ask you to support your brother.

233
01:32:32,164 --> 01:32:34,792
l cannot do that.

234
01:32:47,413 --> 01:32:53,215
For centuries Arabs have been ruled by
people with no respect for law...

235
01:32:54,186 --> 01:32:57,246
...monopolies handed out for the
things that people want...

236
01:32:57,623 --> 01:33:01,787
...commerce stifled, young people
unable to find jobs.

237
01:33:02,328 --> 01:33:06,594
Anyone who criticizes is thrown in jail...

238
01:33:07,199 --> 01:33:09,599
...or put to death.

239
01:33:10,202 --> 01:33:11,999
And women...

240
01:33:12,371 --> 01:33:16,102
...are treated as second-class citizens.

241
01:33:16,275 --> 01:33:20,769
The coronation is tomorrow, and your
brother has the support of the Americans.

242
01:33:21,047 --> 01:33:25,245
And 1 0,000 of their troops
are stationed in our country.

243
01:33:28,154 --> 01:33:29,519
True.

244
01:33:30,823 --> 01:33:34,486
My father is ill and weak, and unwilling
to oppose the Americans.

245
01:33:36,529 --> 01:33:39,157
But others are willing.

246
01:33:39,665 --> 01:33:43,157
When a country has 5 percent
of the world's population...

247
01:33:43,335 --> 01:33:48,102
...but does 50 percent
of its military spending...

248
01:33:49,508 --> 01:33:55,378
...then the persuasive powers of that
country are on the decline.

249
01:40:09,922 --> 01:40:11,890
We are a small group...

250
01:40:12,458 --> 01:40:16,485
...the ones who carry convictions
and ambitions.

251
01:40:18,096 --> 01:40:19,859
And within this group...

252
01:40:20,232 --> 01:40:22,598
...there is another, smaller group...

253
01:40:23,202 --> 01:40:25,830
...who flee from the worldly life...

254
01:40:26,605 --> 01:40:29,267
...in order to spread the true faith.

255
01:40:31,043 --> 01:40:33,341
You're ready.

256
01:40:40,319 --> 01:40:46,417
Connex-Killen Oil announces the gift
of a new children's hospital...

257
01:40:46,592 --> 01:40:49,083
...to be built in honor of the new emir.

258
01:40:49,561 --> 01:40:52,223
l wanted to be on a bobsled
in the Olympics.

259
01:40:52,498 --> 01:40:53,590
What's a bobsled?

260
01:40:57,936 --> 01:41:00,234
Wasim knows what a bobsled is.

261
01:41:00,405 --> 01:41:01,633
Papa, l need to ask you....

262
01:41:01,807 --> 01:41:03,775
Tell him about the bobsled!

263
01:41:06,845 --> 01:41:08,904
Tell him what a bobsled is.

264
01:41:10,182 --> 01:41:11,649
lt's a little car.

265
01:41:11,817 --> 01:41:14,217
A little car that goes down a track
of ice and snow.

266
01:41:14,386 --> 01:41:16,877
Papa, may l borrow some money
for the bus?

267
01:41:17,789 --> 01:41:21,782
Oh, how the snow sparkles,
the crunch of it under your feet....

268
01:48:51,910 --> 01:48:56,313
Connex/ Al-Salwa LNG loading facility
The Persian Gulf

269
01:58:45,136 --> 01:58:46,763
During the funeral...

270
01:58:47,138 --> 01:58:49,606
...I want everyone to be quiet...

271
01:58:49,840 --> 01:58:53,037
...and I should be lying on my right side.

272
01:58:53,644 --> 01:58:58,206
You should throw dust on my body
three times while saying:

273
01:58:59,150 --> 01:59:01,311
''From the dust we are created...

274
01:59:01,752 --> 01:59:04,312
...and to dust we return.

275
01:59:04,855 --> 01:59:07,949
From the dust a new person
will be created. ''

276
01:59:59,710 --> 02:00:04,204
Everyone should mention that
I died pure of heart...

277
02:00:05,149 --> 02:00:07,617
...and that the next world is the true life.

278
02:00:11,956 --> 02:00:17,553
The next world is the true life.

Re: Subtitles not working (using .srt file)

Postby eltouco » 19 Jun 2010 01:58

could be that the .srt file and the .avi file doesn't correspond to each others. and it is very likely if their duration are different.

I've seen in the debug, that your movie is 24 frame per second, which looks like a dvd rip of a region 1 DVD ('NTSC' DVD, the video is encoded at 24 fps and then played at 29.97fps by the dvd player)
maybe the srt file comes from a region 2 DVD (PAL, playing at 25 fps) that could explain the difference in duration.

try to play these on another player, like mplayer or media player classic to see if the result is the same.

I don't really get all the details of what you were talking about, but I get the point.

I did not get the video and .srt files from the same place. So they do not correspond. I thought I pointed that out in my first post, but I don't think I was clear enough.

I was going to try what you suggested, but I accidentally hit the wrong key and deleted the .avi from my SD card. Apparently, files deleted from SD cards cannot be undeleted (who knew? typical MS product, huh?).

So I have downloaded the movie again (I think I downloaded the same file). I set the verbosity to 2 again and got a new log file http://www.mediafire.com/file/hm5nuttjtlm/vlc.log, but it looks just about the same as the first one (eyeballing it). I also tried setting the movie and .srt to the same name again, but still no luck.
  • Windows Media Player did not even display the video (but the audio came through).
  • I installed Media Player Class (x64). When I played Syriana.avi, I got a warning "No D3DX9.dll found...". Play - Subtitles - English and Enable were both checked when I ran the movie (it seems to have automatically found the .srt), but I did not get any subtitles.
  • I did not try mplayer. It was too difficult to install
Is there a way to fix the .SRT file, or other way to get it working?
Thanks for all your help.

there is a windows program for mplayer called smplayer
here is a link

http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

Smplayer is very simple to install, there is a Graphic User Interface just like VLC, and it works fine too like VLC, it is sometimes usefull to make comparaison or to avoid a bug that is on one and not the other

regardding your question, about modifying the .srt file, it sounds tricky to me maybe it's possible, no way to get the .srt file that really correspond to that movie ?

you could also try to download a MKV file that contains, video track, audio track, subtile in the same file and play it with VLC, this way you are sure everything is fine, I gave up AVI file a long time ago and prefer the MKV format.

Syriana.srt also did not work in Smplayer. I think the real answer to this thread is that I have to find the right .SRT file (which may not exist), a .MKV file, or I'm SOL.

Re: Subtitles not working (using .srt file) (BINGO!)

Postby StupidUser » 25 Jun 2010 00:03

FYI: I found this: http://www.moviesubtitles.org/movie-2205.html

If you like to turn the subtitles on for quietdialog like me, then I think I hit the motherload. And this site is just what the URL implies. Check it out if you're ever watching a movie with hard to understand dialog.

P.S. Please don't reply to this post. I am busy watching Syriana the way I like to! :D
