update:
i just downloaded the 0.8.0 version.
seems that "--control" is replaced by "--extraintf".
i launch from the prompt but the two timelines does't sync together.

i also tried with the gui..in the advanced options there are a checkbox for the master and an input field for the slave.
i used those but again it doesn't work.

i also search on the forum and on google, but seems that noone used the netsync succesfully.

so, is really possible to use it in any way?
can anyone try it and tell me if everything's workin fine on his pc?

thanks a lot!

I tried the same just now using 1.1.0 RC1. I tried running the master and slave on two different PCs in the same room, and also on the same PC. (Windows XP in all cases.) I used the command line.

In both cases, both players start playing the remote URL (from YouTube in my case). The master is smooth. The slave is really jump and doesn't seem to be synchronized at all, it's half a minute off.

I notice "telnet interface" is off, does it need to be on? I tried adding "--extraintf telnet" to the command line, but the check box is still missing. Has the option changed?

Is this supposed to work? Does it work in any instance of VLC? I really need to get some synchronized video working.

hey mlepage!
is nice to know that im not alone :D

i was trying with vlc. 0.8.0, and you can find more infos here http://is.gd/cL9Zz

please, can you share with me the code you write in the command line, for both client and server, and the way to get netsync "semi-functional"?
did you try to open a local video and not a streamd media from youtube?

thanks a lot, have a great day!

Yes. I am using VLC 1.1.0 RC1 on Windows XP.

I am launching the "master" as:

Code: Select all

vlc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90 --control netsync --netsync-master
On the same machine, I am launching the "slave" as:

Code: Select all

vlc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90 --control netsync --netsync-master-ip 127.0.0.1
I've also tried it with the slave on a different machine, pointing to the master's IP.

I find that in all cases, the videos launch, but they are not synced at all. VLC still shows its controls, and under view menu interface, only console is checked.

How does netsync work? Does it open a port or something?

If I change "--control netsync" to "--intf netsync" then I get the same results, except VLC shows no menu or controls.

I tried the technique mentioned here (which involves multicast) and still had no luck (plus the video didn't show, only audio):

Code: Select all

It's still not clear to me, exactly how this is supposed to work. If they are any additional requirements, such as configuring ports, they are not stated in the docs page where I got those command lines.

This page suggests not playing the video in the same VLC instance that is the netsync master: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=39832

This page suggests removing the control command line argument from the client: http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation_ ... es/netsync

Neither work for me. Still no syncing!

OK let me break it down. Here's what I want to do:

I want to play this same YouTube video on more than one machine, synchronized. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90

Can anyone give me a setup (VLC version, any special configuration of VLC/PC/network, and working command lines) that will do exactly that?

Ideally, I wouldn't have to stream anything, and all clients would get the video from YouTube, and only talk to each other to synchronize. Surely this is possible?

Another question. In 1.1.0 RC1, if I go into tools preferences, click all (instead of simple), then go under advanced, I can see a place to configure network synchronization. But where do I actually turn it on, so that netsync controls the playing? I don't see any network synchronization settings under the control/interfaces section.

hello mlepage, unfortunately i didn't solve the question.
netsync doesn't really work in vlc 0.8.0 or vlc 1.1 and the documentation is useless.

the lack of clear and definitve solution for NETSYNC on this forum, and in the net too, drive me to think that it could be removed from the player like it was.
netsync unfortunately doesn't work, and is sad to observe that nobody answered us.
