GPU accel on?

Postby FrenKy » 04 Jun 2010 00:03

Hi *,
sorry if this has been asked before, but I did not find it.
How does one verifies that GPU acceleration is switched on? If I play full 1080p movie, I get 100% CPU usage, some other players have 1-2% CPU usage playing same movie.

I expected to see something in the log, but if I call VLC with switches

Code: Select all

VLC --verbose=2 --log-verbose=2 --logmode=html --file-logging --logfile="vlc.txt"
nothing is logged.
Only success I had was with :

Code: Select all

VLC --extraintf=logger --verbose=2
But there I can't see much..

Code: Select all

C:\Users\frenky\Desktop>find /I "avc" mkv.txt ---------- MKV.TXT [028684f0] mkv demux debug: | | | + Track CodecId=V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC [028f2460] avcodec decoder debug: libavcodec initialized (interface 0x344503) [028f2460] avcodec decoder debug: trying to use direct rendering [028f2460] avcodec decoder debug: ffmpeg codec (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) started [028f2460] main decoder debug: using decoder module "avcodec" [01fc9ba8] avcodec decoder debug: libavcodec already initialized [01fc9ba8] avcodec decoder debug: codec not found (Text subtitles with various tags) [028f2460] avcodec decoder debug: using direct rendering C:\Users\frenky\Desktop>
So to questions at the end :D

//EDIT

Same problem here.

Playing 1080p I get 70%-80% even when enabling hardware acceleration (CPU usage doesn't change when activated) whereas MPC uses 9%-15% when hardware acceleration is activated.

In this case I'm using Windows XP SP3 with an nVidia 8600M GT (512MB) and the 197.16 drivers.

Here's some debugin'

AFAIK, on Windows XP VLC GPU acceleration does not work, but I do not know why it does not work for me on Windows 7...

Aham. I'll delete the debug info then.

yeah i agree with this there should be some sort of indicator like possible the controls add a gpu icon that turnes on when the gpu acceleration is on so we know that it should be on

GPU accel is ONLY in Vista/7

And, you need to apply the switch in the preferences.

It would be helpful if there were no switch on windows xp since it doesn't work with it.

Fill a bug on this, but this is a good idea.
