The sad truth is that the Macintosh version of VLC is lagging far behind the Windows version in some key areas. For example, they can easily install new skins from a menu option, while we cannot. They also already have an audio gain control, while we do not.

While the Lunettes VLC project does use skins from a menu option, Lunettes still isn't ready for prime time by a long shot, and there's only four skins/themes right now.

Yah.. I guess the whole fact that QuickTime in OSX is actually a decent player (except is lacks many codecs
by default) put VLC in OSX a bit under the shadow. But that's no excuse.. This is something that would take
2 minutes to a developer to fix...

I find it odd that you would make that comparison between QuickTime and VLC. One of the reasons why VLC is so popular with Mac users is because QuickTime has always been a very flaky player. I have never been impressed by its performance, and I've been using Macs since 1990.

Have you tried playing many mkv files in QuickTime?

Forget it! It is a total waste of time.

VLC runs circles around QuickTime in a number of areas. The one area where I have found QuickTime Pro to be useful is in its ability to import and export video files and images to different formats. I've never tried VLC's exporting wizard, so I don't know how well it works by comparison.

True, that's indeed why I have been using QuickTime as well, to convert format around.
But QuickTime is much better than windows medial player... God I hate that product.

Well, if there is one thing that you will discover about the Macintosh development of VLC, it is that it is quite slow, possibly because there aren't that many Mac programmers working on it.

Pierre and Felix are doing what they can with Lunettes, but as I told them quite recently, until Lunettes adds some features that are already available in the regular Macintosh version of VLC, there is no way that I can consider making Lunettes my default movie player.

I'd help if I could, but I am not a programmer by any means.

VLC has become something of a standard... I don't think this Lunettes will have much hope.
I wish your friends considered that before starting their own project

Actually, Lunettes is built on top of the VLC code. It is simply a project to give the Mac version of VLC a more Mac-like UI.

Will they succeed?

I really don't know. I don't get the impression that there is a very large following yet. Maybe that will change once Lunettes makes some noteworthy improvements.

For the time being, I am quite happy using the regular VLC. It has considerably more features than Lunettes at this point in time.

I just wish that they would implement audio gain and skins directly in VLC for Macintosh.

Then the question is.. why not just join the OSX developer branch of VLC...

I get the impression that you don't know much about Lunettes, or about Pierre and Alex.

For the record, they are both part of the OSX development branch of VLC.

If you open the "About VLC Media Player" window, you will see both of their names listed in the credits.

They both participate in these forums, and also helped to design certain parts of the VideoLan website and wiki.

Here is a apple script that can be embedded as a service to decompile the .nibs so that interface builder can work with VLC's interface. (Reenabling the previous suggestion which was to suppress on open via IB. )
