IPTV Set Top Box emulation

Postby d_m » 23 May 2009 05:35

Hey everyone,

I've been using VLC for quite a while to watch IPTV that my local network provider broadcasts via UDP. The quality is really great, and I recently bought an HDMI cable to connect the VLC laptop to my LCD TV. It worked nice, except the annoying fact I always need to reach out to the laptop to switch a channel.

So I'm wondering, is there any way to have my TV populate its digital channel list with the ones available from the VLC SAP playlist? That would be really convenient as one would be able to access both regular and IPTV channels from the single remote control unit. Of course, until the VLC laptop is off :-)

I'm sort of a newbie to this, but it seems like I'm looking for an STB software emulator. This may sound fair as STB is ultimately a small computer with some software in it. I have three laptops in my house, so I'd rather dedicate one instead of buying a new piece of hardware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks!

There are some iptv stb emulator software out there. It is used by IPTV service technicians for testing purposes. An exaple is the BCI iptv stb emulator (bci.eu.com). it would be nice to try it out (anyone???). But I am sure this function could easily be built into vlc, as all stb's utilize standardized protocols to handle the streaming. An idea for the developers team?

Ranjit you will need VLC player with enabling home network during installation, & an M3u play list file that has all the addresses of iptv channels that you will have to subscribe from your internet provider (ISP) you can search to find this file on google. after this all u have to do is to right click the m3u file & choose open with, than select vlc player to play the list, just click 'view' in vlc menu & choose 'show play list' thats it. now u can double click any channel in the play list to watch in VLC. Enjoy. one more thing, u should have a wired connection with our DSL modem/router as some time wifi does not work.

Hi all
sometime back I posted in VLC feature request section "I am using VLC player to watch IPTV channels provided by my ISP as UDP stream , I can pause a live channel but some features like rewind live channel (time shift view) is not possible, it will be great if this set top box function with scheduled recording can be added to VLC player." but there has been no response, seems that not many people are aware how great it will be if VLC player offers this functionality, it will save many users the money they spend on Set top boxes, hope someone will bring this into notice of VLC programmers.
