Videolan + xbmc

Postby wabiD » 08 Mar 2005 01:39

Reciently xboxmediacenter changed how the video playback core was loaded. Now there is preliminary support for multiple video playback units. I am scouting out to see if any of the videolan devs, would be available to port videolan to xbox, so everyone can enjoy WORKING post processing, and better video playback.

The current core is mplayer, and postprocessing is broken. Mplayer also uses much more cpu/ram than videolan which is why vlc is suited better for xbox. The xbox only has 64mb ram, and a 733mhz cpu.

If anyone is able to start or work on a port please speak up, there are over 10k xbmc users who would love to see mplayer replaced.

This is something that truly should come from the community itself. We can't port to every platform. Lack of developers/time/hardware is the problem here.

understood

I understand what your are saying. However the reason i ask, is because a) the person who ported mplayer to the xbox in the first place has left the project
b) because every current developer on the project capable of doing so is swamped, including writing a new core based on mplayer to support dvd menus (Which mplayer currently does not)
c) because hopefully your yeam understands everything concerning the project much more.

The xbox is running a modified win2k kernel, and there is no need for a gui, because the rest of the project takes care of it. So I hope that somone who reads this who would like to help, speaks up, because otherwise it may never happen.

Also if somone from the community/team would wish to attempt this, there is a good chance they would be able to recieve hardware. Any request to the xbox-scene community for donations, usually results in some. Especially with the generous teams that exist.

no threading

I think the biggest problem will be that the xbox doesn't have a true O.S. and therefore no threading. VLC is highly threaded. This fact alone may preclude an xbox port from ever happening.

that's a good and valid point. VLC is highly threaded.
