Handbrake says the 32-bit VLC download is NOT 32-bit?

Postby rfolkerth » 16 Jan 2010 02:36

GREETINGS, ALL

I am an innocent user, merely trying to convert a DVD of my home movies from the 1960s ... created from VCR tapes by my Samsung DVD Recorder ... to a form that I can edit on my Mac dual 1 GHz G4 machine.

So I downloaded HandBrake and tried to use it.

HandBrake told me it could not find VLC and VLC was required for this job. So I downloaded VLC, being careful to select the 32-bit version for Power PCs.

Now HandBrake tells me that VLC is not 32-bit. Hmmmmm. I have downloaded it TWICE, selecting the 32-bit Power PC version.

What is going on? Are the VLC downloads mislabeled? Is HandBrake confused? Have I punched the wrong button? Is something else going on?

HELP!!

Keep in mind that VLC has nothing to do with Handbrake. You may need to contact the authors of Handbrake to resolve this problem.

Which version of Handbrake and VLC do you have installed?

I had the same frustrating experience. I loaded the same thing from
http://mac-free.com/download/HandBrake.html
under the intel version. I do not know why, but this one works.
Please let me know if it worked for you.

Frustrating indeed, the above answer is of little help if you are on a G5 mac, I have handbrake 094 and vlc and have upgraded and downgraded all the version I have and the 32 bit version of 1.0.3 or .9 of vlc all lead to the 32 /64 bit conumndrum.

I have a copy of the old 'lite' version of handbrake that runs fine but i do not know if it is even using VLC

Another possibility is if you did not place VLC in the applications folder, or you renamed it. Chances are it is expecting a specific path to VLC.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

I had this issue and it was driving me nuts. I have a 32bit PPC so naturally my VLC version was a 32-bit one, no matter what HandBrake said.

However, the problem was solved by downloading the Universal Binary version of VLC. It seems that HandBrake can't find VLC if it is just the Intel or the PPC version, only the UB works...

@Len: that's absolutely correct. HB can't detect PPC32-only builds properly. Intel32-only builds are detected correctly though.
