DVB Streaming, not all streams work

Hi Guys,

I'm having a strange situation here. Let me first quickly describe what I'm doing before I jump in to deep.
I've a satellite-dish connected to a dvb-s card in my server, the server is running a program to stream the received tv-signal over the LAN to a client (laptop) running vlc to play the selected tv-channel (dvb), no problem here, lots of channels work, only a few channels (my most favourable) do not work.


Now, somewhat deeper.
I use DVBDream to view and stream on/from the server. this works great. lots of channels (FTA, and with valid subscription card).
In the program there's an option to stream the received signal as udp on the network.
ie. I have a channel (DMAX), select it on the server, on the laptop I open vlc udp://@235.1.1.1:5000 works like a dream.. for over days and days.
some other channel (BVN) however, does not play in vlc on the laptop. it opens with the first frame and freezes.
I know the stream is on the network, mpc plays it, but crashes anywhere between 10sec and 10minutes.
Now, the strange thing is, if I let DVBDream record the received signal (in .TS) and open that in vlc on the laptop, it plays fine. crisp audio/video.
This is all with vlc 1.0.5 on the laptop (win7 ultimate).

on the server (windows home server) I can also open vlc and open the stream DMAX plays fine. BVN doesn't, again, the recorded .TS on de hdd plays fine in vlc 1.0.5
now, I did some research. finding that a previous version of vlc is able to play this. I downgrade on the server to 0.8.4a DMAX plays fine and BVN plays video, but no audio.
I can see that there's 1 video stream, and 1 audio stream. both are selected. again, the recorded .TS on the hdd plays fine to in vlc 0.8.4a audio and video.

Some further investigation leads to that almost all tv-channels I receive (hundreds) can be streamed to a client as long as the language in the dvb-stream is not Dutch

Does anybody have the smallest clue what this problem is .

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before you try to open the stream. After the opening fails, it should show the reason.

Either the stream is damaged or VLC parses it incorrectly. Could you record sample file from the steam and share it to us?

I have done what you said and dumped the output to files. (one of working, other of not-working)
(If I open the recorded TS which is not working over udp it plays when using open file.)
I also have recorded TS files, again, one of working, other of not-working.
I haven't investigated the log myself yet. didn't know this function existed. going to have a look now.

i've the feeling i'm going to say something really stupid, but isn't 1.0.5. the latest windows build?
i did a quick search on 1.1.0. but only came up with linux versions.

unfortunately, 1.1.0 git didn't solve my problem either.
Sure. the uploaded .TS file works, but that is because it is played from disk. not from stream.

I'm pretty sure I didn't explain my problem correctly.
the dvb-program I use can stream the received ts stream to the network and save it to the disk.
when it is saved to the disk, it can be played by vlc.
when the dvb-program streams the received TS onto the lan, it doesn't play in vlc.
So this is a bit hard to reproduce.

I just looked if I can save the upd-stream to disk with vlc, but when I select transcode (save to disk) function, I have to select the container, codecs etc. .
Is there an option in vlc to just save the received stream to disk?

I have created 2 .TS files which can reproduce the problem.

Hello VLC_help, thank you for your answer, I really appreciate the time and effort.

I have taken another machine to test with. (xp sp3) but without any luck.
I now have 3 machines (Win7, WinXP, WindowsHomeServer (w2k3)), all 32-bit on which I can reproduce the problem. Strange you'ré not able to reproduce my results.
I'd really loved to see the file playing at your place

The versions I use to test on all machines are 0.8.4a, 1.0.5 and 1.1.1
All of these are the zip-files 'no installer needed' versions, could this be the problem?
(results on all machines are the same btw 0.8.4a plays only video, other versions don't play any)

Do you have suggestions in order how I can provide you with more details/files to this problem?

I have tried another player and it plays the not working file and also my files .
