Win7 x64 vlc 1.0.5 Bluray 1080p not full screen

Postby koverdorf » 26 Feb 2010 04:50

I am running:
Win7 Pro x64
Dual monitor (Toshiba 32" HDTV 1080P, Samsung 24" LCD 1920x1200)
VLC 1.0.5

I'm playing bluray movies in m2ts and mkv format. The videos are 1080p and VLC even states it in the Media Info. Everything runs great and looks great but the movies have black bars on the top and bottom. I am playing them on the Toshiba in native. Occasionally a movie will show full screen for a couple minutes then the bars will reappear.

I have tried a few things with no solution. I can only imagine there is an issue with codecs.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Most Blu-ray movies have black bars on bottom and top. That is because most Hollywood movies have aspect ratio between 2.25:1 and 2.4:1 which is wider than the aspect ratio of 1920x1080, so studios have to add black to video when they encode it (Blu-ray specs only support 1920x1080, 1440x1080 and 1280x720 HD resolutions).

So its common for a Blu-Ray that is 1920x1080 to have black bars on the top and bottom? That sucks. I have The Dark Knight in Blu-Ray 1080p and some scenes will be full screen and others wont. That doesn't make sense.

The Dark Knight has some IMAX scenes. So the aspect ratio changes between scenes.
