dshow-caching problem?

Postby krattai » 17 Feb 2010 21:38

Hi all,

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and VLC 0.9.9a

I've been trying to work out a latency problem and can't make it go away.

Using "Cheese", there is no obvious (<50ms) latency from action to display, but when using VLC, there is a latency of around 1/2 sec. I've been through the forums and web searches and the best I've found is to use :dshow-caching= to reduce this latency. I have not been able to get this to work in either the GUI (Show more options -> customize) nor through command line vlc -vvv v4l2:// :/dev/video0:standard=3:width=320:height=240:input=1:dshow-caching=10

It doesn't matter if the video source is the on-board webcam, a USB webcam, or a firewire source.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

As the name implies --dshow-caching is meant for DirectShow. You'd need to use --v4l2-caching here

I wasn't aware of the v4l2-caching, I only had 0.8.6 variables.

Thank you very much, latency is pretty much gone (at least as good as another non-buffered video capture app). This makes me smile!

Cheers!
