Can't play DVDs on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (VLC 1.0.5)

Postby Caesar_091 » 12 Feb 2010 13:59

Hi all,
I've been trying playing original video DVDs since a week now and I'm sad to say that VLC just doesn't work (at least on my config).
I've tested many discs from different brand/studios with always the same result (everything works with Apple's DVD Player.... but it's so ugly! I want to use VLC for everything video or audio related). Some time I can see the DVD-menu of the disc but if I click on anything on the menu VLC just crash or stop responding or anything happen.
I've tried opening the disc with command+d -> /dev/rdiskXX, or opening the VIDEO_TS folder, or directly a VOB file: no way to get it working.
I've tried deleting preferences (manually and with the automated script), reinstalling VLC, installing a nightly build (1.0.5-branch-intel64-20100119-0209 or vlc-git-intel-20100124-0010 or one of the latest that doesn't even works since aren't finished afaik).
I haven't tried to do the same things on Windows 7 via BootCamp (will try ASAP).

Here the log of what happens with a DVD of mine:

- ATA NEC ND-4570A drive (firmware version 1.03) or a SATA LG GGW-H20L (firmware version YL03) for playing DVD discs.

When selecting the DVD, check the box to disable DVD menus. There was a bug related to this, but I don't know if it has been resolved yet.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

Thanks... I'll try the "libdvdcss.2.dylib" file from the VLC 0.9.9a package tip and will post results asap.

I've just tested five Video-DVDs using the libdvdcss.2.dylib taken from 0.9.9a (Intel version) and it does works (both menus and audio/video playback) :)

Hey guys,

I've put a unfinished version of VLC 1.0.6 on our OS X development server. It would be awesome if you had a look at it and see if it solves your DVD playback issues. Personally, I cannot reproduce any issue on my MacBook2,1 with OS X 10.6.2 and Region 2 discs in a RPC2 drive.

If this version doesn't solve your issues, please give as much info as you can. Basically, I need: Mac model, drive model, region the drive is set to, region of the DVD, name of the DVD.

http://jones.videolan.org/~videolan/fpk ... .6-git.dmg

Please don't share this version on versiontracker, etc., otherwise I'll have to pull it. Please note that this build is Intel-only.

The version you posted here it's working great (4 DVDs tested) on my configuration with both my 5,25" drives (an ATA NEC ND-4570A fw v1.03 RPC1 and a SATA LG GGW-H20L fw vYL03) installed on a MacPro 1,1@3GHz with an ATI X1900XT: thanks you all behind VLC development!

Just let mt know I can do some more tests.

Hi,

It sounds like my problem:

...and if you check the above thread - this fix seems to have worked for me too!

cheers

Hi!

I read this post due to the problems I am having on 2 disks.

Here is all the info along with a log. Disk plays fine in DVD Player. But from the log it really looks like the disk is faulty. Maybe not the same problem as this thread?

Computer:
OS: 10.6.2
iMac 7,1
Intel Core 2 Duo
2.4 GHz
4MB RAM
Drive
Matshita DVD-R UJ-875
Firmware: DB09
DVD Region: 1
Drive Region: 1
DVD: Julie and Julia (Don't tell anyone)

I get good sound but completely pixeled playback with or without menus. I have tried 1.0.5 and the version in the thread below. No differences.

Here is the log. Lots of MPEG2 errors.

Re: Can't play DVDs on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (VLC 1.0.5)

Postby Clayton_028 » 19 Feb 2010 00:50

Sorry for the quick posts. I have 2 DVDs that show this behavior. But I have many that do not. I am starting to think this is a disk problem. Brand new Hurt Locker DVD has no problems with the 1.06 version.

Maybe not worth spending much time on.

Hello,

I'm having a similar issue as above - I have the most recent version of VLC (1.1.3) and I tried downloading the V 0.9.10 (couldn't find the 09.09).
I'm trying to use VLC as an alternative DVD player for my other regions DVD's (mine is now permanently set to North America, but I'm now living in Australia). Both versions do not play the DVD's. Any other suggestions? (I'm not that good with computers so flashing my drive is out of my skill set!)

Suggestions greatly appreciated!

o_belani_o: what OS version and what computer model?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.
