VLC Player for iPhone / iPod Touch and iPad

Postby AJ68 » 29 Jan 2010 10:53

Hello,

i'm new to this Board and i like to say HELLO to everybody!

I'm just wondering if it is possible to build a Standalone VLC Media Player for the iPhone / iPod Touch and the new iPad to view directly from a Satellite Receiver???
The new introduced Apple iPad would be a great device for watching TV, using the Streaming functinality from most Satellite Receivers, around the house and also from the outside.
For example, my and most other Receivers are using acces with a webbrowser to show the List of all Programmes and when you click on such a "Link" a little file will be downloaded and the VLC Player is starting up automatically and you can watch TV on your PC or Laptop.

Now the big question is, will this be to complicated to program or is there anybody who can build such a VLC Player for these devices :?:

Regards,
AJ

There are already VLC builds for jailbroken iPod touch and iPhone. But not an "official" one and it is very likely that there won't be one.

The iPad is very different from the iPhone, in the way that the larger screens is more suitable for movie at TV-shows viewing.

Also the iPad har a much more flexible and accessible file system which makes it easy for the user to transfer files from PC/Mac directly to the iPad over Wifi og USB.

I'm not a developer, but will gladly pitch in on the design work of the player if needed, and I really hope that we will see an official VLC player for the iPad.

There won't be, since Apple doesn't want us there.

Can you elaborate a bit on this one? Is it just your gut-feeling or did anyone tried it out?

Forget it. It's about Apple not allowing other codecs than h.264 to be used on the mobile platform, right?

Right. :) Because you could import movies not bought on the Apple Store ©®

iPAd is not even supporting Flash which is most important properly then how can we expect anything else
I have to disagree. Flash sucks. There isn't anything done right on that front and only thing we can do is to blame Adobe, since they haven't fixed their sucky product. And since Flash 10.1 won't fix the biggest problems, I don't think Adobe will ever get proper Flash out.

While I share your opinion about Flash, the major point about VLC on the iPhone OS is that Apple doesn't allow Apps competing with Apple's own default Apps in the App Store. That's why there is no Opera and no Mozilla Firefox for the iPhone OS right now. As soon as Opera is released on that platform (there are rumors that this could happen this spring), we may think about it again. However, until then, it doesn't make sense for us to invest time and money in a port that is never published.

Has anyone really tried?
Apple is allowing Netflix, Kindle, Kobobooks, and other competitors on the iPad. It stands to reason that a lot of people have videos on file shares which are not accessible through iTunes.

A lot of people would like an alternative for everything on the iPad which iTunes won't do, and are easily willing to pay (not donate) for such an app.

If you spend time developing VLC for free, VideoLan should maybe spend some time trying to port itself to the iPad and run it up the flag pole! At least talk to Apple.

I would pay $9.99 for such an app to connect to my NAS.

Sent from my iPad

(p.s. If you guys don't do it, maybe Movist will)

Can the iPad be used for certain computer programs? I am a practicing physician and I am considering of buying the iPad for my workplace. However, the main deciding factor for my decision is if the computer program Cisco VPN client can be used on the iPad. The reason for this is I use this program to file my patients' charts and other information. So if this could be done, then I find the iPad a great buy and a better alternative to the conventional laptop.

actually, there are apps that let you play several video formats available in the app store, like oplayer.
and now that you can transfer files to the iphone/ipad via usb (using itunes), and you can also share files between apps with the new version of the iphone os, i think vlc for iphone and ipad would be great!

Hi,

I am also interested in buying the iPad for the beautiful hardware and the software. But the lack of choices of video formats is holding me back.

Will there be a VLC player for iOS considering that there are apps on the appstore that allow people to play a lot of formats not supported by apple like mpg, avi, mp4, flv, mkv, wmv etc. For example iPad.

I am also willing to pay to get VLC player on the iPad

I would pay for a vlc player for sure. Worth doing even if you had to jailbreak to use it.

As a previous poster said $10 would be a fair price. I feel a lot of people will be ready to buy it at that price point. Considering that it will add a huge boost to the iPad's media capabilities. Personally I am ready to pay $20 for it. Will be well worth it!

I would pay $50, yes $50, only if it could connect to my NAS and play my 1080p MKV files. The iPad does have 802.11n so I think it would be possible.

P.S. I joined the forum just to let you guys know there are people interested. I am one of them.

I know it is not easy to program under the iOS because they limit so much, but I'm convinced that if anyone can do it, its the VLC team.

I have the Qnap 639 Pro with 12TB of 1080p video. The protocols available are: CIFS/ SMB, AFP(3.1), NFS, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, Telnet, SSH, iSCSI and SNMP

But I mainly use SAMBA aka SMB.

I know 1080p is tough to do wireless, but I think a 10 second buffer or even 15 would be sufficient. Especially considering I only use 802.11n on my WiFi. Not really interested getting it on my iPhone, it is more important for the iPad.

Wireless isn't the problem. It is the decoding capabilities of those devices which won't play those files real time.

Ohhh, do you think the iPad is not capable of decoding 1080p MKV packaged videos?

I am not sure what Apple's A4 processor is capable off, but I remember a couple of years ago, low end desktop systems struggled to play 1080p video.

Different people seem to have different needs. My main goal for VLC for iPad is to use it during my long commute. I currently carry a heavy laptop which I would like to dump and use the iPad for watching movies and other media. I don't necessarily need 1080p as I am going to be watching anime primarily. Which are encoded in numerous codecs and are in various container formats.

VLC for iPad I am crossing my fingers and waiting for you. Guys I am going to up what I am ready to pay. I am ready to pay $50 as well :)

Well, well, well.
If we do one, it wouldn't be $50 or anything of the like.

About 1080p, I have to check, but I doubt we can use QTX to do the decoding.
