VLC Copyright violation

Postby chemsing » 01 Feb 2010 14:33

There is a website: http://www.veetle.com which - as part of a browser plugin - distributes a modified version of vlc.

They make you agree to a license, which states:

...
... All title and copyrights in and to the Software ... are owned by Licensor or its
suppliers. This EULA grants you no rights to use such content. ...
...

This is a gross breach of the GPL!

I'm not sure which of the boards is the right place to report this. The administrators may move it to a more appropriate place.

I believe Veetle provides the source of the modification. Last time, it was the case.

GPL is far more than just providing the source code upon request!!!!
It contains the right of anyone to use, modify and redistribute!! This is the most important feature!!!!!

The veetle license says:
...
This EULA grants you no rights to use such content
...

and also
...
You may not sell, transfer or convey the Software to any third party without Licensor's prior express written
consent.
...

This is definitely the opposite of GPL!

Indeed but you have to understand that Veetle is in fact 2 applications:
  • Modified VLC plugins under the GPL
  • Proprietary application that takes the P2P stream and restreams it to VLC.
The communication is just done by streaming on the http protocol.

Sure I do understand the two different parts.
But their license does not differentiate. They don't even mention the GPL on large parts on their project.
The majority of their code is vlc and by their license they even try to prevent you copying it.
Their project heavily relies on vlc's work!

http://download-mediaplayers-nl.com/vlcplayer.php
distributes a installation of VLC that requires you to send a SMS to get a code in return to install the player.

The license apply to their part.
On the VLC part, the GPL license apply and so far, they have provided the source and modification when asked.
I fail to see what we could do more about it.
