When trying to opening multiple mp3s at once, vlc only opens one.
It would be far more convinient while using mp3s, to open a playlist.

Tools->Preferences
If you're in simple mode: ->Interface then In the box called Instances, choose Allow only one instance and Enqueue files when in one instance mode.
If you're in View All mode, ->Advanced and choose Allow only one running instance in the box labled Performance options. Either way the options should be on the first page that comes up when opening Preferences.
NB: the One instance when started from file option doesn't enqueue files, at least not for me.
