Transcoding live RTMP to live MPEG-4

Postby str3tmonk » 17 Jan 2010 22:27

Hello VLC Community,

I am looking for a solution to take a live RTMP stream and re-stream it as MPEG-4. I googled for months now but I cannot find anything that could do this.

I tried capture software that take RTMP and save it to disk on hourly basis and then stream those files one by one through Windows Media Encoder but that didn't work either.

Can someone suggest a way I could achieve this with VLC?

Thank you very much!

The new 2.1 version of rtmpdump includes an application called 'streams' which can connect to a RTMP server on-demand, and stream it over HTTP to another player. So far, the HTTP output is good enough for VLC but doesn't seem to be good enough for other players due to a hard-coded FLV format header, and I think that it can only support one client. Therefore I suggest grabbing this application from http://rtmpdump.mplayerhq.hu/, running it in the background, then using VLC to transcode the stream to MPEG4.

Hope this helps, I only discovered it today and am happily impressed being able to easily listen to my favourite digital radio station that only offers listening with their flash player. :)
