laptop to HD TV via VGA

Hi, i have my laptop hooked upto my 32" HD TV via a VGA cable, all works fine except when i run a video through VLC the laptop screen auto adjusts to full screen and your unable to exit it but the tv you can access the laptop normally, basically what im asking is how do you swap these around so i can use my laptop as normal while watching the film in full screen on the tv. i know this is possible because i had it working once over but no idea how i did that, any help would be greatly appreciated

Move the VLC window to the external view port area, and toggle fullscreen only then.
