VLC crashes/won't display video when I open a video file

Postby Blue_Rogue » 29 Dec 2009 12:18

On two separate computers that both run Ubuntu 9.10, VLC 1.0.2 has started to not work properly. When I try to open a video file with VLC, I get one of two results: VLC crashes outright, or it will play the file, but I'll get a transparent video area instead of the file's video content or even a black screen. I created a brand-new account on my laptop to test VLC, and it works fine on there; just not on my user accounts.

Here is output for an instance of the latter error, where it just plays audio and doesn't display the video. This is an instance of VLC crashing outright.

Resetting preferences and erasing the config file didn't help. Neither did uninstalling/purging and then reinstalling it.

Help?

Yes, I do, on both computers. (Well, the package is technically glx-dock, but it's essentially cairo-dock.) I recently installed it, too. But I've already tried closing it and running VLC, and it doesn't change anything.

I'll play around with it a bit more, though...

Edit: Alright, yes, cairo-dock has something to do with it. If I run VLC before cairo-dock, VLC works fine. Otherwise, even if cairo-dock is closed, it messes up.

A quick Google search turned up this thread on the CD forums that told me how to fix it. Thanks a lot for the suggestion that cairo-dock was the problem. :)

Okay, I am in the same situation with Cairo Dock and VLC installed on the same machine and the VLC videos showing as transparent window. I would love to have the fix for it but the Cairo website is down. Anyone cares to tell me what I can do to fix this? Or should I wait for the Cairo Dock site to get back up?

Thanx and cheers,
PepeLapiu :P

AFAIK, this is fixed in VLC 1.0.4 anyway.
