Subtitles slow down playback

I have no idea what you (great) guys had changed in vlc starting ver 1.0.0, but after this playback of a h.263 file with enabled subtitles goes quite sluggish. There's no such problem in 0.9.9 whatsoever. I kept hope that it'll change in 1.0.3, but to no avail. The bug is still here, to my regret. Any thoughts?
