VLC: unstable playback situations

Postby soul65 » 16 Feb 2005 03:41

The problems I have when playing DVDs(R2) I have rented:

1-In VLC: When I hit Files>Open Disc, D: drive is selected by default. My DVD ROM is E: so everytime I have to change this manually. Is there a...final solution to this?

2-And more importantly, when I choose DVD(menus) in Disk types, DVD plays back rather problematically. I mean , for example, it shows the "screens-chapters" menu but everything is slow paced(not a continuous play, sound too) and then when the movie begins again there are little pauses not a smooth running. I have to choose "DVD" from "Disc type" for the movie to begin playing normally. This happens, sometimes again, if I choose directly a chapter and title from "open-disc". Also at this situation, VLC may play the chapter title and stop. Than I have to key in the next title and so on...

3- a)Windows won't recognise VLC as the default DVD player. b)Real player(which I've thought can play DVDs) depends on a DVD player application...you already have, it says.

VLC has something called Preferences.....

Perhaps your computer is to slow, or perhaps DMA isn't enabled on your drive. That can be a bit annoying.

don't know how to do this, perhaps someone else?
Don't use PMs for support questions.

how to enable DMA for DVD ROM Drive under windows 2000

Postby soul65 » 04 Mar 2005 23:58

Indeed my problems about VLC not playing smoothly the DVD Menu and later the movie itself are solved(see my post "vlc:unstable playback situations" ).

how to enable DMA for DVD ROM Drive under windows 2000:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def ... deptID=894

This page says:
"...Recent hard disks, DVD ROM drives and CD ROM drives support DMA transfer, as a method of improving drive performance.

DMA transfer may be required in order to achieve the best results for capturing video, or playing DVD movies.

By default, this option is DISABLED in Windows 2000..."!!! Is that so?

My Primary IDE channel at IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers was DMA enabled BUT the Secondary IDE channel was NOT. So I changed it following web site's instructions.

I hope I am not interfering with other functions of Windows2000 pro doing so. Time will tell.
