Which video format will play on most Portable Video Players?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

I want to distribute some videos in a format that will play on Portable Video Players.

mp4/h264
Thank you for the advice.

However this is not universally so.
It's not the case for Archos products.
It's not built into Archos Portable Video Players.
One has to purchase their "video & podcast plugin" to be able to play h264 video.
Until the new models appeared two years ago Achos players did not support h264. So anyone having one of their earlier players is not able to play h264 video.

So I wonder how many other manufacturers don't have h264 compatibility built-in. Plus which other manufacturers don't even support it.
