APPLE REMOTE PROBLEM WITH 1.0.3

Postby Shadar » 27 Nov 2009 22:43

Hi everybody,

I've got a problem with my Apple remote (the newest model) and VLC 1.0.3. The problem is that 'play/pause' and central silverish button are not working... at all (they are not causing iTunes to appear - just doing nothing at all). 'Next/previous', 'vol up/down' are working perfectly. 'Menu' causes time briefly appear in the upper left corner. So I am really disappointed. I cannot start/stop video. Has anybody encounter something like that? How can I resolve the issue?

Thanks a lot!

p.s. play/stop works perfectly in other applications, for ex iTunes

I have the same issue, the volume control works but the centre silver button and the play/pause button do nothing.
I am running 10.6.2 on a new i7 iMac

The problem seems to be unsolvable... I guess, the only solution is to switch to another player, which is a shame!

Same here.

Not only does VLC no longer respond to the Apple remote, but even when I uncheck that setting (Preferences/Interface/Maint interfaces/macosx/Control playback with the Apple Remote), as long as VLC is in the foreground it doesn't let the remote control iTunes either.

Definitely reduces the value of VLC as a media manager. Hope there's a fix soon!

Seems that the new 7 button remote (with play/pause beside menu) uses new events for the play-pause and center buttons.

I'm having the exact same problem with the New Apple Remote and VLC. All the buttons work within the program except for the centre 'Select' button and the 'Play/Pause' button.

Any news on when a VLC update will be released that will support the new Apple Remote? Or is there any add-on that will allow the new remote to work with VLC?

Thanks!

I've been looking through the changelogs and there was an update about 2 months ago to do with AR cookies:

https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/changeset ... ed2322c3aa

I think that the relevent AR cookiestrings just need to be mapped to the correct functions in VLC.

Is anyone who is reading this thread validated to raise bugtracking tickets?

Thanks

I'm having the same problem, buddy.

Except, my remote doesn't work at all!!! I mainly use it for volume control.

Now I have no control!!!!

I posted the same question on here a couple weeks ago, and have gotten zero responses!!!

People must not like me. :-(

Here's my original post (I have no idea why I've received zero responses):

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro. It's about 4 years old. It came with Mac remote (looks kinda like an iPod Nano).

I've been watching movies with VLC player for a year or so. My Mac remote has worked with VLC Player the entire time. I've been able to Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward, and turn the Volume up and down.

Recently, the remote stopped working (I actually have 2 remotes and they both stopped working).

No, the batteries are not dead.

Does anybody know why my remotes have stopped working?

Thank you,
-Tony

Looks like a solution to our problem may be delayed for a long while.

As beeki has pointed, the new Apple Remote uses a new code for the Play/Pause button so we need VLC to know this new code. I've been looking to source code and it seems to me that a quick fix could be possible and easy. We need to modify the file that deals with our Apple Remote device; this file is called AppleRemote.m. Starting in line 93 there is a matching between Apple Remote codes and VLC codes, so a new line here would do the trick. Here is the original code:

Code: Select all

/* current Snow Leopard cookies */ msg_Dbg( VLCIntf, "using Snow Leopard AR cookies" ); [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonVolume_Plus] forKey:@"33_31_30_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonVolume_Minus] forKey:@"33_32_30_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonMenu] forKey:@"33_22_21_20_2_33_22_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonPlay] forKey:@"33_23_21_20_2_33_23_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonRight] forKey:@"33_24_21_20_2_33_24_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonLeft] forKey:@"33_25_21_20_2_33_25_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonRight_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_14_12_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonLeft_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_13_12_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonMenu_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_2_33_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonPlay_Sleep] forKey:@"37_33_21_20_2_37_33_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteControl_Switched] forKey:@"19_"];
and this is what it should be:

Code: Select all

/* current Snow Leopard cookies */ msg_Dbg( VLCIntf, "using Snow Leopard AR cookies" ); [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonVolume_Plus] forKey:@"33_31_30_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonVolume_Minus] forKey:@"33_32_30_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonMenu] forKey:@"33_22_21_20_2_33_22_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonPlay] forKey:@"33_23_21_20_2_33_23_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonRight] forKey:@"33_24_21_20_2_33_24_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonLeft] forKey:@"33_25_21_20_2_33_25_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonRight_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_14_12_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonLeft_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_13_12_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonMenu_Hold] forKey:@"33_21_20_2_33_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonPlay_Sleep] forKey:@"37_33_21_20_2_37_33_21_20_2_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteControl_Switched] forKey:@"19_"]; [cookieToButtonMapping setObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kRemoteButtonPlay] forKey:@"33_21_20_8_2_33_21_20_8_2_"];
I added a new line at the end to tell VLC the new Apple Remote code for the Play/pause button.

The problem is that I can't test this fix because I was not able to compile VLC in my machine. I followed the steps they say in the wiki (http://wiki.videolan.org/OSXCompile) but it doesn't work in my Mac.

So, if any of you could try to update that file and compile VLC we could test if this little change would work.

Happy new year!

Hello,

I've no real solution, but until this bug is solved, I've successfully tested the 1.0.2 version. To download the old version, the best way is to use an ftp mirror like the one I've chosen : ftp://ftp.u-strasbg.fr/pub/videolan/
Moreover, you'll be able to find specific version like the vlc-1.0.2-intel64.dmg which works perfectly for my intel macbook.

Greatings,

Xavier

Hy,

I have exactly the same problem... The remote seems to work except for play/pause button... :(
After many searches on internet (thx google :p) i couldn't know if this issue is due to Snow Leopard; New Apple Remote or VLC !

If anyone has a solution, a hint or know a VLC-like player which can work with this new remote please tell us !!! :)

thx

edit: sorry i don't saw the last page... i'll try x64 version tonight :)

"NicePlayer" works well with the Apple Remote in Snow Leopard. It actually uses Quicktime on the backend for playback (or another mode as an option). It plays most anything you can play in VLC (and Quicktime, if you have Perian installed). Plus it has a playlist feature. The UI is really cool. Quicktime TOTALLY stole it's new user interface from this app (it's been around for a long time).

Although I should disclose that I'm using a third party driver to get it to work in Boxee. This drivers actually puts the remote into some kind of Legacy/Compatibility mode. It's called "Candelair" in case you're interested. But even with this driver, I can't get VLC to play nice with my Apple Remote.

Linkage:

Candelair

NicePlayer
http://code.google.com/p/niceplayer/

Good luck! And I hope you all enjoy NicePlayer and Candelair!!!

VLC works flawlessly with both the old and the 2009 Apple Remote with Mac OS X 10.6.2 (or later) and 10.5.8 (and earlier). 10.6.0 and 10.6.1 are not supported because of API breakages by Apple. Note that VLC version 1.0.3 or later is required to make use of the Apple Remote on 10.6.2. Older versions don't support the updated Apple Remote API.
Please note that the usage of 3rd party Apple Remote drivers is discouraged and is known to introduce issues when controlling VLC with the Apple Remote on supported Mac OS X versions.
