VLC crashes with MKV [WinXPPro]

VLC crashes when I play MKV files. After about an hour with the subtitles on, WinXP reports an error with VLC. The file still plays fine, but without subtitles, and VLC seems to act normally unless I try to change audio or subtitle tracks.
This has happened with several MKV files, and they play fine after restarting VLC.
I notice the error signatures says VLC 0.8.0.0, but VLC reports version 0.8.1. I have tried uninstalling the old VLC and reinstalling with a fresh installer from the server, but the error reports still say 0.8.0.0.

Does it happen when you seek around the location where it crashes ?
Does it happen on various files ?

It happens on different files, and doesn't happen in the same place each time.
If I bring the same file up and seek to near where VLC crashed, it plays the file fine (with subs & everything).
Here's what I do when I get the error:
I load about 3-6 half-hour files in the playlist and change to view subs when each file starts. Usually somewhere around the third file VLC will crash (but not actually close, just no subs and a windows error message).

While it's happened repeatedly (always on different files and not on the same file 2x in a row), I can't really discern any typical recurrent circumstances that actually cause the subs to stop appearing and windows to report a critical error.

Does it happen with other file formats or only mkv ?

So far, I've only used VLC to play MKV and AVI files. I haven't played any ogg or other files that have subtitles encoded into them. I honestly don't know if it would give the same random error with another format.

I did notice a list of fixes for a previous release that VLC was reverting to msvcrt.dll, and it is supposed to use msvcrt40.dll, so I suppose I shouldn't be getting any errors with msvcrt.dll...
