Why is the zipped archive Win file bigger than the unzipped?

Postby paris_in_49 » 13 Feb 2005 23:47

Hi!
Why is the zipped archive Windows file bigger than the unzipped?

(zipped ca. 9 MB, unzipped ca. 6 MB)

Isn't it usually the other way? I was wondering if it is better to download the zipped archiv, if there aremore encoders or other things in it.
Can someone help me?

The unzipped file you're talking about is only vlc.exe. The zip package contains the entire application -- vlc.exe plus all the plugins, activex,... in the subdirectories.

I guess you are talking about the zipped version and the .exe installer version, and the answer in that case is that the .exe installer version uses better compression than zip.
