VLC cannot open encoders

Computer: Mac G4 (PowerPC), OS X 10.4.11

I used to use VLC 0.9.9. I today discovered that there was a later version for Tiger, viz. 0.9.10 Grishenko - (c), and installed this. When I tried to transcode and save a stream (which played perfectly well in this new VLC), I got an error message, saying that VLC could not open the encoder. Here are the details (which include various previous attempts to use VLC):

I had a bug an hour ago, or so
I wanted to make a Streaming Video file.
After starting up Streaming/Export Wizard program
The computer stuck Finder and VLC mediaplayer both didn't react anymore
My computer crashed for the first time in years
I had an older version VLC-0.8.6d and encountered problems either, I think to due a memory leak
So I updated to VLC 0.9.10
I don't know much from different Codecs and Video formats
The last one was M peg 4 Video bitrate 1024 and M peg 4 Audio bitrate 192
The format chosen was M peg4 / MP4
I have chosen to insert subtitles and without Local Playback; because it asks more from processor/memory
An inconvenient is that I do not receive error messages this way
What is the best Codec and bitrate and Video format,with an acceptable result ?
And without asking to much from processor/ memory

Hi all,

I have tried my best to search through different forums and sites before submitting my question. Might not be really important, but I have tried to sort the playlist when opening more then one file for continues playing. For example clip1, clip2, clip3 etc.... none of the columns works if want to sort - application quits every single time. Any of you have got the same problem?

Get VLC 0.9.10 from here and make sure to pick the version labelled "powerpc".

Im knew to vlc and the transfering of media files. i have question. I have mts files that Im opening with VLC and watching their contents, Im wondering how i can save them so I can import them on to final cut express 4. I have a macbook .. Do I need too use another file converter like Voltaic to convert them first or does VLC covert them so I can open them with FCE4

In general, you should create a new thread when asking a new question...

to answer it: while VLC can convert files from one format to another, it is more appropriate to use an application specifically designed for this purpose. Handbrake and ffmpegX coming to mind. Both of these should be able to do the job.
