iTunes *.m4v crashes VLC

Postby hollowman » 13 Sep 2009 09:27

I'm new to VLC and have just downloaded the latest VLC player.
I can't play -Tunes-downloaded .m4v files. Attempting to open them causes VLC to close (crash) immedaitely. Is this due to DRM? Any workaround?

My PC: Win XP SP2; Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz; ATI Radeon 9600 video card

DRM'd files can't be played in VLC.

DRM'd files can't be played in VLC.
Sigh.
m4V via iTunes is a popular format, and lots of queries like mine (see below) are popping up on the Net.
So ... VLC/VideoLan needs to openly and explicitly state DRM incompatibility of iTunes-based m4V on the home page or here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

IAC..is there a Plugin or other "hack" either avail. or in the works so VLC can play them back? I'm not a copyrights violator. I paid for these files and now, thx to Apple/iTunes' forced "upgrades", my PCs cannot effectively play them back. I think one of the main reasons is that the latest QT/iTunes needs duo-core Pentium (post May 2005); I "only" have a P4 from mid-2004.

No it doesn't. Quicktime runs in my single core AMD Sempron.

It may run, as does mine, but the latest version of iTunes/QT, makes iTunes-based m4v files choppy when played.

As far as the DRM Plugin -- I'm a newbie...how does one install this?

You have to compile it by yourself or find someone who shares the compiled file.

Not everyone can compile code, interesting you seem to think that's something everyone can do.

I would also like to use something other than Quicktime or iTunes to play my iTunes video downloads, the video halts and lags and stutters in iTunes, it isn't much better in Quicktime. I don't like using PowerDVD either... the controls are much harder to use.

It's the primary reason I downloaded VLC.

If this wasn't going to support DRM video, it should give an error other than "VLC media player has just crashed. Would you like to send a bug report to the developers team?"

It shouldn't crash at all, it should put up an error saying it's not a supported file if that's what is causing it to crash.

I'm perturbed this wasn't made clear up front and isn't easy to fix.

Can you share the file?
