Unloading when end reached

VLC unloads the video after the end is reached. Is there any way to just pause video, but not unload it?

There was an incomplete for this in 1.1, but the author seems to have given up in the middle.

Are there any workarounds? Can I make VLC pause the video when it has almost finished playing?
