VLC Firefox plugin not loading...

Running Firefox 3.5.3 on windows 7 professional

i installed vlc, it works fine as a standalonep layer. when I try to load a file in my browser, say, a .wmv, the page stays blank (white) and nothing happens. no frame, text, nothing. When I use vlc test sites (.e.g, http://altair.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc ... height=240) it is also blank -- but It still seems to allocate the proper "blank" space on the page.

I have another laptop with the /exact/ same windows and firefox, and the vlc plugin works fine.

what can I do about this? Where can I look for error codes / logs. etc. I have no idea how to approach this as a debugging task... please help!!

Which version of VLC are you using ?
And have you used the installer or the 7zip/ZIP package ?

I have the same problem.

Windows Vista x64 SP2
VLC 1.0.2, 7-Zip version (extracted to C:\Program Files (x86)\vlc-1.0.2)
Firefox 3.5.4 (npvlc.dll and npvlc.dll.manifest copied to C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\plugins)
The plug-in shows under Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and Tools > Options > Applications.

There's nothing where the plug-in content should be. On the demo page linked above, clicking the Play and Fullscreen buttons produces these errors in the Error Console: "document.video1.play is not a function" and "document.video1.fullscreen is not a function".

I have confirmed that my dlls are in the correct firefox folder.

the plugin is shown under the Tools -> addons ... etc menu

I have the exact same error message in the firefox error console as carpe diem

I am running 32bit windows

I had only copied the files, according to your documentation at http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/ ... l#id310965:

Windows

Quit Firefox or Mozilla

Copy the two files in VLC_Installation_folder\mozilla (usually C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\mozilla) to your mozilla plugins directory (Usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla\plugins or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins).

Restart Firefox or Mozilla

If that's not the correct installation procedure, please let me know what registry keys I have to write (and please update the documentation). I've tried deleting the files from the Firefox plug-ins folder and adding the following to the registry, but it made no difference. I went to about:plugins and verified that the plug-in is loaded from \mozilla under the VLC folder.

I've tried the installer version in Windows XP SP2 (32-bit) and it doesn't work either. I think the plug-in is just broken. The only difference is that on the HTML test pages instead of a blank space, there's a black square with white text in the middle that says "Waiting for video".

The location might change a little on different machines, but IIRC it was HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VideoLAN\VLC

I'm fairly sure in my case HKLM\Software is for 64-bit applications. I've added the key anyway and it didn't help.

If VLC player can run in your system, then the plugin should also work.

Checking InstallDir and about:plugins are only easy methods I know to check if everything is OK.

Im a developer so I dont mind trying some of the more advanced options. for example, using a logging-enabled dll, or, building my own plugin locally. Id just rather start with pointers than working toward a wrong direction

Jim, have a look at the nightly builds. I noticed some debug builds over there.

My registry keys were correct. It turns out the DLL has to be in the same folder as the EXE. So not only does the 7-Zip version have the plug-in in the wrong folder (vlc-version\mozilla) but the instructions also incorrectly say to copy it to the Firefox plug-ins folder, which simply doesn't work.

These are the required registry keys for my system (again, Vista x64). The first one tells Firefox where to find the plug-in, and the second one tells the plug-in where to find the executable.

Even so, the plug-in loads but it doesn't work right. And I know it's not because of any of my settings, because I tested with the installer version and I chose to clear the old preferences when installing. The "download file" links work, but not mmsh, rtsp, http, or worst of all, Apple trailers. The latter is the only one I actually care about. I tried adding a Windows Firewall exception but it made no difference (it was set to prompt me if blocking anyway). I've also tried the latest trunk build but it was worse: there was just a black frame where the video was supposed to be and Firefox froze every time.

I also encountered this problem.

What worked for me was uninstalling Orbit. There was a new version announced recently and I just installed it a few days ago.

I uninstalled that and used an earlier version of Orbit. Orbit 2.71 works for me and the VLC plug-in.

Hi VLC_help,

I am also facing this same error & trying to resolve this issue from previous 5-6 hours. I am using Firefox v3.5.13, 32 bit windows XP, VLC player 1.1.4 & VLC firefox plugin v 1.0.2.
I have checked all the possibilities discussed in above posts. VLC firefox VLC plugin shown on the Add-ons list, desktop VLC player also working fine but does not work on the web. VLC plugin also shown on about:plugins. I have also checked registry every thing is okay.

From http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:WebPlugin page, I am trying to run Example 1 but it gives me javascript error i.e. document.video1.play() is not function.

Can you please help me?
