UI does not reflect playback rate for 2nd item in playlist

vlc 1.0.1, xp32 sp3
  1. Add 2 items to the playlist and start playing
  2. Increase the playback rate (the UI, status bar, shows the increased rate)
  3. when the second item starts, the rate drops back back to normal (it would be better to retain the set, higher rate)
  4. when you now increase the rate for the second item, the status bar still shows 1.0x

I have this same problem. I like to listen to audio books at 1.5x but the playback keeps going back to 1.0x when the playlist moves to a new chapter.
How do I set the default playback rate?

I think every user that listens to video/audio books/lectures would benefit greatly from a solution to this problem.
It is a high priority problem that needs solvin'.
