VLC Sound problems

Postby Montana216 » 13 Oct 2009 13:48

I have been using VLC for some time with freinds home video clips etc, but thought that I would transfer a few of my favourite films onto the hard drive of my PC, then play them through my home cinema system. The soundcard I'm using is a M-Audio 2496.
I have used both DVD decrypter and DVDFab (as ripping software ONLY) to rip the dvd to my hard drive and both rips stutter very badly on the sound on both DD and DTS.When I play the DVD directly through VLC the same happens, but not on windows media player.I have tried the settings while playing the movie but no improvement.

So, can someone help me out, as I can't use Windows media player to play VOB files ???

Have you tried Waveout audio output module?

I have now tried this output module, and it has improved it a hell of a lot.

Now I need to put that into context. Before the audio was so bad , that it just sounded like a really bad techno track and that was when the soundtrack should have been 2 people speaking. Now the soundtrack misses every 4 or 5 seconds.

I have tried the other audio output settings and the "Waveout audio output module" is the best but FAR from acceptable.

Where do I go from here ?

You can also try different video output modules.

I've just tried every single video output choice there is (about 8 in all), and that hasn't changed the audio skipping at all.

Are there any other suggestions ?

I have the same sound skip problem. I just built a new pc and downloaded VLC. I than transfered my movie files to the new hard drive. When i play a movie the sound skips, but the same movie's sound works fine in Windows media player and DivX player.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the VLC player a couple of times and had the same problem. I don't have a sound card like Montana216 does I'm using my on board sound so i think that can be ruled out as an issue. Maybe with some more discussion we can figure this out :)

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before opening the problematic file. It should tell more.

This is the error report i got when doing what you asked , but just for further clarification it's all the files that are doing this not just one. I have also tried all the different output setting like suggested above, and tried playing with other audio setting but can't seem to find the right combination of setting to fix it. Sorry about the large post but i did use a short movie clip to keep the report short.
Hope this helps you help me and ty :)

The skipping audio has stopped now, but there is some slight crackling. VLC is my favorite player and i don't want to use anything else.

I set the video output to "DirectX3D" and the audio output to "Win32 waveOut extension output"and it works correctly now, with no more skipping audio. For anyone who has to do this to after you set up the options like mentioned above and save if you restart the video it will sound the same as if it didn't work. You need to close down VLC completely and restart the video, than it works corectly after that.
Tyvm for helping with the skipping audio now maybe if u can give me so advice to get rid of the crackle it will be perfect after that.

Ok , so I have now used DIRECTX3D video output and Win32waveout audio output and I still get audio skip.

I set the verbosity to 2 and here is the pasted messages:-

There is another couple of things that I should mention.

In the audio options section, if I untick the "use s/pdif when available" then I can't get either DD or DTS , if I tick this , I do get both of those , but that's when I get the audio skip.
Also, when I tick this option I don't get the sound coming through my home cinema setup, it goes to my desktop speakers, to get the sound to go through the home cinema amp I have to right click the white speaker symbol in the bottom right hand side of the toolbar and select playback options, then click on the s/pdif option and set as default.

I have not been able to find a post like this, after looking through the search results, hence why I'm asking a lot of questions and giving as much detail as I can.

It shows
main debug: audio output is too slow (44989), trashing 32000us
but no reason why that happens.

So what else can I do now ?

Is there anything I can do that can help you find out why ?

Does it help if you rename VLC.EXE to VLC2.EXE ?

Just wanted to say thanks to those who provided help in this forum. I was running into an audio skipping problem too and the changes here seem to have taken care of it. I do hear the slight crackling (and what seems to be a slight bit of echoing) but that's much more ignorable than the skip.

Thanks again!
