Skipping Audio Problems

Postby Halfling117 » 19 Oct 2009 19:10

Hey guys,
Whenever I try to play any type of video file on my VLC player the audio skips like a bad record. The video is fine and the audio manages to keep pace with the video but almost every 2 seconds it skips really bad. I am running VLC on a windows xp system with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 driver and this just started happening a little while ago. I went back and played other files I have watched that didn't have this problem and they skip as well so I know it is not a problem caused by the files themselves. I looked on the forum and saw how to retrieve my messages and it seems every time my audio skips the message tells me that the audio is "starving". Here is a sample of the message: (sorry tried to make it shorter)

Anyway I was wondering if there were anything I could do to stop this annoying skipping sound! Earlier I downloaded a new directx version and a some new driver software. I thought this might be the problem so I tried a system restore to a previous date so I could have the same settings as when the VLC worked right, and it didn't change anything. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks a bunch!

The same thing has recently started happening with me:

Recenty installed NVIDIA GeForce 6200 card, updated to most recent drivers, occurred both in VLC versions .8.6 and 1.03 (I updated to 1.03 to try and solve the problem). the video card is a recent update(It had been a fireGL T2 I think), sound is a SoundMax.

the problem started about a week or 2 ago (Which is about when I updated the card, which may have started my particular problem), and is more severe for some files than others (Some files have messed up sound all the way through, others sort themselves out at the beginning)

(which files are you guys using to get all those warnings and such? Looking around some of the VLC files and bug reporting reconmendations doesn't seem to say where that information would be.)

Hi I had the exact same problem with same ATI radion GF Card 4800 .I noticed the prob when I updated the GF Card drivers ,
I tryed everything to fix it but in the end the only solution was to go back to 8.2 version and that fixed it and im going to keep going up in the numbers untill I meet the prob again .then go back one.

Yep same for me on both my desktop and laptop

Desktop
GPU: 2*GTX285- latest drivers (as of post date)

Laptop:
GPU: ATI HD2600

This used to happen in 1.0.5 but it only happened every few minutes- it happens every 5 seconds or so with 1.1

I had the same problem and was able to fix it on my machine. My laptops power management scheme was set to "Video Playback", I changed it to "Maximum Performance" and problem fixed. Reading about this problem elsewhere it seems that this issue can be caused by the audio decoding thread "underperforming"( not being woken up in time, not having a high enough priority). I first tried uping the priority of the vlc process, but that didn't work. Changing the power management scheme to "Maximum Performance" fixed it though.

Is there still no fix for this issue? It is extremely obnoxious. I've been using VLC for years and have always valued its extreme versatility. However, I find myself using WMP for pretty much all my video playback. I'd really like to fix this.

Ok, how ridiculous...went through entire process of signing up merely to post a reply to this in hopes of helping others.

I had the precise problem as others here and it was really making me angry..it was working fine, upgraded to latest version ,etc..

It is as stated above...when I plug my laptop in and not using only battery power it works perfectly..

I changed the power setting recently when on battery power as I have finally replaced the dead laptop battery..

Set the settings as stated above by the other fellow to maximum or off when using battery power...when I plug it in I have no problems.

Otherwise I would recommend also as stated above upgrade your audio card driver..

Ciao!! And thank you!!

so is this a driver problem or what? do other programs run into the same problem, or is it just VLC?
