720x576 that turns to 1365x576 instead of 1024x576

Postby lwc » 16 Oct 2009 17:21

Here's a MPEG-2 clip with a video stream size of 720x576, but with a wider Mpeg DAR (Display Aspect Ratio):
http://rapidshare.com/files/293457824/n ... c.mp2.html - 3 Mb

PowerDVD reports the file as:
Video Attributes:
Video compression mode: MPEG-2
TV system: 625/50 (PAL)
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Display Mode: Both Pan&scan and Letterbox
Source picture resolution: 720x576 (625/50)
Frame Rate: 25.00
Source picture letterboxed: Not letterboxed
Bitrate: 10.48Mbps
16:9 would turn 720x576 into 1024x576. Alas, VLC turns it to 1365x576 instead, which would make it CinemaScope (2.35:1 which is roughly 1365/576~2.37):

This video IS marked as having a 2.35:1 DAR so VLC is displaying it right accordingdly:

Code: Select all

General Complete name : E:\Temp\no-audio-in-mpc.mp2 Format : MPEG-PS File size : 2.63 MiB Duration : 3s 168ms Overall bit rate : 6 966 Kbps Video ID : 224 (0xE0) Format : MPEG Video Format version : Version 2 Format profile : Main@Main Format settings, Matrix : Default Duration : 3s 120ms Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 6 500 Kbps Width : 720 pixels Height : 576 pixels Display aspect ratio : 2.35:1 <==== Frame rate : 25.000 fps Standard : PAL Colorimetry : 4:2:0 Scan type : Interlaced Scan order : Top Field First Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.627 Stream size : 2.42 MiB (92%) Audio ID : 128 (0x80) Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Duration : 3s 168ms Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 448 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Video delay : -48ms Stream size : 173 KiB (6%)
Maybe the video should be remuxed with the correct DAR of 16:9 because I think there is a conflict between the MPEG PS container DAR and the video stream DAR..

Notice that you can change the aspect ratio from the Video menu -> Aspect ratio then select 16:9.

Is this from MediaInfo? I know it claims 2.35:1 but PowerDVD claims otherwise.

.
Remuxed how? We're talking about a clip that was ripped as is. If it's ripped as is, why should it be modified?

I know. This is what I think should happen by itself.

Yep that's from MediaInfo but you're right some other tools are reporting 16:9 so I'm not sure if MediaInfo is reporting the information from the container or from the video stream.

AviDemux can do that with the Copy Streams feature, you can also try ProjectX (this recent build from Oozoon requires Java 1.6).

I know. This is what I think should happen by itself.
I know so I've opened a ticket: trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/3111

Thanks for the ticket!

When you say remuxed, are those programs rippers or do they take ripped files and do something to them?

How you got this file - i.e. what exact software was used to rip it from DVD?

The MPEG2 sequence headers are broken:

SEQUENCE MPEG2 MP@ML PAL BT.470-2/B,G 720x576 chroma 360x288 fps 25 maxBps 812500 vbv 229376 picture 720x576 display 540x576 pixel 256x135

display width (540) is lower than encoded width (720).

How you got those stats? Well, I've used DVD Decrypter + Mpg2Cut2, but got the same results with DVDShrink.

mpeg2dec -v -s0 no-audio-in-mpc.mp2

If VOBs from DVDShrink (full transfer) look the same, then this DVD was incorrectly manufactured.

The output from the DVD itself is the same:
Image

The output from DVDShrink is the same:
Image

And here's a sample VOB of this film made by DVDShrink (with no video compression, in case it matters):
http://rapidshare.com/files/299519351/band.vob.html - 466 Kb

But it's an almost Oscar nominated film, so it's not exactly an unknown film (not that it promises anything, but still).
