missing wxwidgets gui (AND xvid lib support?) in vlc 0.9.x!

missing wxwidgets gui (AND xvid lib support?) in vlc 0.9.x!

Postby n1ghtmare » 07 Aug 2008 03:25

hi there,

no offense to the kde project! you put qt on a good use really :-)

qt is crap, kde and belonging apps in SOME ways are nice but qt is still crap!!!

why? an example of many ...

I just had some NICE hours on compiling qt (more than once!) on a clean and fully operating gentoo system.

finally qt worked for me AFTER some hours of bugsquishing.

vlc has just lost an important part of its reputation. out of the box and working (compiling time doesnt count here :-)

a simple question: i have to pull in the qt toolkit to build an ugly and incomplete gui for vlc 0.9.x ?

i am using the gnome desktop 2.22 (earlier xfce 4.4.2) which are in fact for gtk and wxwidgets based systems.

another thing is i noticed a general perfomance loss in the gui itself which doesnt speak well for qt.

has a silent agreement happened in the past between the vlc core developers and trolltech to kill the rival gtk+ toolkit and its apps from the scene?

PLEASE PLEASE continue to maintain the wxwidgets (or maybe in future a gtk+ 2.x like) gui!!!

anyone interested in a poll about the future of the wxwidgets gui in vlc?

another vlc lover,

n1ghtmare

No way. Having used both wxWidgets and Qt4, I can tell that first one is awful crap.

First, you have no arguments, you are just saying that Qt is bad, with NO arguments.

Then, if you compile your VLC, then, compile the wx module after patching your configure. We will not care about your bugs though.

i didnt say remove the qt gui from it for the future, but ...

have the developers ever considered a "faithfull" search of maintainers for the wxwidgets gui ?

think on that please first if you two havnt and one more thing: it sounds a little bit both of you are kde stuff only users ( or at least qt based stuff )

there are systems out there which havent simply enougn resources to use qt gtk stuff together ( small pda like systems as an example) so maintainers of the wxwidgets gui should be very welcomed here in the future

ps: was the xvid support also dropped in vlc 0.9.x ? ----->> one of the most commonly used video codecs ever !!! ----> couldnt find ANY related xvid stuff (neither through ffmpeg or direct xvid libary depency) in the configure script outputs ("sh configure --help" and earlier "sh configure")

with all respect to the core devels: what the h*** is going on here with my media player/streamer of choice for virtually all situations?

People have been free to step up for maintaining the WxWidgets plugin for the past two and a half years. The fact that it was drop due to being unmaintained has been widely publicized over that period. Yet, I have only ever seen Gtk-whineys, none of which proposed to take responsibility.

WTF are you talking about ? Xvid decoding is already inside FFmpeg...

I'm on 0.9.1 and I get this message when I try to play an XVID file:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "XVID". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
My ffmpeg is compiled with xvid support.

Both of you have a miscompiled avcodec plugin built in VLC.

Wrong avcodec version. Blame Ubuntu and install the unstripped avcodec.

I fix it. Just reinstall ffmpeg :) After update from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10, codecs have been deleted. Just reinstall with Synaptic :)
