Stuttering sound

Sometimes during playback of a video, when I'm doing something on the computer or there are files downloading, the sound on the video will stutter and/or the picture will freeze.

Any ideas?

I'm becoming reluctant to use VLC because of this problem. I need help.

I'm finding the same problem, whether playing video or audio. It isn't consistent, but it does happen on all material. I keep most video on hard disks and I know of no other software that can play video-ISO files. But it doesn't just happen with hard disk playback - it can also happen when playing a DVD. Anyone any ideas?

My computer is a Toshiba L305 S5920 laptop 2-3 years old, running Win7.
